The ECenter is the co-curricular heart of ideas, innovation, and entrepreneurship at UNH. Our goal is to create the next generation of leaders with an entrepreneurial mind-set who can see opportunities and identify creative solutions others have missed, one idea at a time. Although part of UNH, we are independent of any one college.
September 2020 Newsletter
The Latest Happenings from the ECenter
Welcome
It feels like just yesterday I wrote this welcome introduction for the July newsletter! That should give some indication on how fast things are moving on campus and with us at the ECenter.

We have a remarkable schedule of events for the fall semester with one of our best ever line-ups of programming. While we're limited by group size from hosting most of our events and activities in person, the dynamic nature of our material will transfer well in the digital/Zoom world.

I would be remiss not to applaud the amazing efforts of UNH to create, in a sense, its own “start-up” with the launch the COVID-19 testing lab on campus and all of the processes associated with making it work. This commitment helps allow students to be on campus with in-person, albeit restricted, education and experiences. While the ECenter is not physically open to groups of students this semester, it is with this commitment of the COVID-19 testing lab that leads me to offer in-person meetings (with safety protocols).
These meetings include one-on-one idea coaching (and the whiteboard sketching!) for any student, or small team, to discuss and help them with their idea or company. It would be easier to move everything to Zoom, but working to meet our student “customer needs” is what we say every student should do with their customers. Personal interactions and personal relationships matter and going out of our way to make those happen in a safe environment is important to us.

As you will read below, we have an amazing and diverse group of first year students coming in through our Idea + Innovation Society. It excites me to see the rapidly growing trend of innovation and entrepreneurship that is happening in high schools across the US. This only reconfirms the commitment and support from UNH, UNHInnovation, and Peter T. Paul in the early days to have the vision to create the ECenter to help recruit the best students who also share a passion for innovation.

Stay curious,
Ian Grant

Student Spotlight: Kendra Bostick
Kendra Bostick, co-founder of Kikori, an education app with special focus on emotional learning and classroom climate activities, is a graduate student earning her PhD in Education at UNH. She hails from Manton, Michigan, and holds a BA in Psychology and a Master’s in Social Work. She first found the ECenter at the recommendation of her advisor. “When I set up a meeting to learn more, I was immediately welcomed in and offered coaching and support, as well as guidance around different opportunities,” she recalls. During her time working with the ECenter, Kendra has engaged in numerous ways. Read on to learn more about her experience in competitions, the Paid Student Internship at Start-Ups Program, and more!
How did Kikori come into existence?

The way that Kikori came about is one of the classic reasons that companies are born - I had a need and then it turned out it wasn't just me! As a School Social Worker, teachers often came to me for support for their students' social emotional needs and classroom climate issues, and I knew the power of these activities in building students' self-awareness and connections. Teachers loved doing activities that built community, however they didn't have time as they had so many different pressures on them from standards they had to meet. Following a survey of 120 educators, we found that while teachers believed that experiential education practices were important, they had difficulty using the techniques due to lack of time for planning and with students, lack of knowledge on how to facilitate, and a lack of resources.

The process of Kikori coming to life definitely wasn't overnight and definitely was full of learning experiences. Following the course, I began a Master's program in Experiential Education with Carla Hacker, which is where I met my partner, Bryn Lottig.

How did the ECenter help you grow your company?

I can't say enough about the ways the ECenter has helped my team and me grow Kikori. Ian Grant supported me weekly by providing coaching on all areas of entrepreneurship including creating a business plan, learning how to create a proforma, and supporting me in learning how to present a pitch. Through the ECenter, we were able to participate in the National Science Foundation's I-Corps program under the direction of Ian Grant, Andrew Earle, Marc Sedam, Beth Sheckler and Maithili Shroff. During this program, my team conducted fifty discovery interviews with educators and developed our value proposition. I received invaluable advice from UNH Alumni and successful entrepreneurs including David Shaw and Fred Forsley. The ECenter supported Kikori through the work study program during which Daniel McCarthy supported our app development. We participated in and won first place in the Social Venture Innovation Challenge and Holloway Prize Competition. I was also able to support undergraduate entrepreneurs through judging the Maurice Prize Competition. We participated in the Paid Student Internship at Start-Ups Program. One of the best things about the ECenter was also the ability to connect with other student entrepreneurs who are making incredible ideas come to life.

What was your experience working with an intern as part of the Paid Student Internship at Start-Ups Program?

One of the highlights of my year was working with an incredible UNH student, Kelsie Dawe, through the Paid Student Internship at Start-Ups Program. Kelsie was a huge asset to our team and served as a reminder about the importance of empowering our youth and how much we can learn from each other, regardless of age. She brought wisdom, ideas, exemplary work ethic and a positive attitude that will always remain a part of our Kikori Story.

What was your experience participating in SVIC and Holloway?

As someone who had next to zero business and pitching experience, participating was definitely out of my comfort zone. However, during each step of the way, as long as my team and I put in the work (which yes, included some crazy long nights!), there was someone on the other side (Ian Grant, judges, other students) who were there with encouragement and counsel. Because of the requirements for the competitions, we were able to produce a high quality pitch deck and learn how to present Kikori. After each round, we gained feedback and insight to help us grow by experts in the field. Through these competitions, we found mentors, advisors, and teammates!

How has the ECenter influenced your future career path/what skills have you acquired?

The ECenter has certainly impacted me for life. Through the ECenter's programs and guidance, I have grown my social entrepreneurship knowledge base as well as my ability to share the Kikori vision with others in a way that is understandable, inspirational, and impactful.

What do you want people to know about the ECenter?

A lot of people think the idea of entrepreneurship can be scary (at least I did!), however we all have to start somewhere. If you have (literally) ANY idea that you care about, especially one that may make the world a better place, the ECenter has a program to support you. There are ways to get involved with others who have ideas, workshops, coaching, work study jobs, internships, hackathons, support with copyright, and people who can help you figure out your thoughts! The most important thing at the ECenter isn't the product - it's the process. The ECenter will support you in learning and personal growth that you can then apply to any area of your life.

In addition to the students, we invite the start-up founders from the internships, the ECenter community of supporters, and UNH friends to hear all about the #ECenterImpact of these programs.

This summer, in light of COVID-19, we opted to have the students record their presentations for us to share virtually. Please check out the presentations all compiled together into one video on our YouTube page.

UNH Announces Edward M. Friedlander ’88 Memorial Entrepreneurship Scholarship Fund
Edward (“Ed”) M. Friedlander ’88 was an incredible man and passionate entrepreneur. He graduated from UNH with a BS in Civil Engineering. At UNH, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and developed lifelong friendships that he maintained, fostered, and cherished throughout his life. These friends are now honoring Ed's legacy with the Edward M. Friedlander ’88 Memorial Entrepreneurship Scholarship Fund.
The scholarship selection will be managed by UNH’s Entrepreneurship Center in conjunction with its Idea + Innovation Society application process.

Ed began his working career as an entrepreneur, then spent over 10 years working and growing with Newmarket International in Portsmouth, NH as a Hospitality Sales Executive. For the last 15 years Ed was the Senior Vice President of Business Development at Vestmark in Wakefield, MA. At Vestmark his tenacity and commitment made an immeasurable contribution to the company's growth and culture. Ed truly believed in the power of Vestmark and the people with whom he worked.

Scott Hendrickson ’89 notes, “I met Ed in 1984 standing in the registration line on our first day at UNH and quickly learned you never have an average day with Ed by your side. The friendships and memories from Durham and beyond inspire us to honor our friend with help from our extended UNH family. To celebrate the gift of Ed Friedlander, we are establishing a scholarship in his name. Please join us in donating to this fund to honor Ed’s memory and the impact he had on all our lives.”

The scholarship will provide merit-based support to students who demonstrate entrepreneurial experience, interest, or skills. If you're interested in donating to the Edward M. Friedlander ’88 Memorial Entrepreneurship Scholarship Fund, please click here.

ECenter Launches New Website
Have you been to our website recently? If not, you're in for a great surprise! After many hours spent performing customer discovery - meeting with students about what was working with the website, what wasn't working, and what they would want to see changed - Allison Bell (ECenter Associate Program Manager) formulated a plan and design. The result is the new and significantly improved unh.edu/ecenter.

The streamlined menu bar and homepage make finding information on your favorite ECenter program or resource a piece of cake. Updated interior pages keep information in one place for ease of use. Buttons and tiles clearly direct users where to click. We hope you check it out and enjoy it as much as we do!

Thank you to the students who provided invaluable feedback!

Idea + Innovation Society
Kicks-off Biggest Cohort Yet
The third cohort of the ECenter's Idea & Innovation Society kicked-off on August 30th with two socially-distanced and masked gatherings. Despite the unusual start to the semester, the students were as excited as ever to engage in ideas, innovation, and entrepreneurship with the ECenter and with each other. Not only is this the biggest cohort of Idea & Innovation Society we've ever had - 38 students - it's also the most diverse. Cohort member statistics include:
  • All five UNH colleges represented
  • Eight US states
  • Two countries
  • Seven have started businesses
  • 18 women
The Idea & Innovation Society is an exclusive group of aspiring first year students who are idea creators, innovative thinkers, or entrepreneurs from across UNH.

The goal of the Idea & Innovation Society is to provide students with the opportunity to be at the forefront of the idea and innovation community on campus, while gaining unique benefits through the ECenter. It embraces first-year students from all colleges, majors, and backgrounds and provides a network of like-minded individuals with whom to connect, collaborate, share ideas and resources, and help you the students faster with their ideas and innovations.
