At United Way, we fight for the Health, Education, and Financial Stability of every person in our community.
Hernando County's first-ever "Day of Hope for the Homeless" was hosted on Saturday, September 23rd at People Helping People's HELP Center.
Thanks to our community partners' support and compassion, we were able to provide vital services, support, and hope to over 45 individuals in need. From obtaining IDs to offering employment opportunities, showers, and more.
This is just the beginning of our journey to help those experiencing homelessness.
Let's continue to unite, inspire, and create positive change.

Getting to Know Our Board: | |
BOARD Member Highlight
United Way of Hernando County's Board of Directors is full of dedicated community members and leaders. For this #UNITED News release, we are highlighting United Way Board Member Samantha Carpenter. Samantha is the Customer Service Manager at the Publix Super Market at Hernando West and she is a proud Hernando County resident. In large thanks to Sam’s background with Publix, her history with United Way runs deep! Sam has coordinated, advocated for, given to, and volunteered with United Way for well over 15 years! She is the example of what it means to LIVE UNITED!
- Why is LIVING UNITED through United Way important to you?
"Living United is important to me because I believe that when we're committed to helping each other we become stronger and more capable of leading better lives ourselves. There is so much need in our community that can be circumvented or even solved through the help that United Way provides and I think it's important to be a part of getting that message out. I personally have seen how hard the United Way staff work to be dedicated, passionate leaders in our community to enact real change. It's easy to want to get involved and be passionate about helping others when they set the bar so high as an example."
- In your field, explain why you would believe Publix and United Way work so well together as community partners.
"United Way and Publix have been partnered for over 40 years for a reason -- we have the same goal of being dedicated to making a positive impact in our community. It was such an important value to our founder, Mr. George, that he put it into our mission statement to be "involved as responsible citizens in our community." Publix prides itself on making our customers and associates feel like family; in that regard, we have a broader range of audience when it comes to advocating for the work United Way does to help meet our community's needs and educating them about their impact through our partner agencies. It allows us to get involved ourselves through workplace giving campaigns, food drives, workshops and volunteer opportunities throughout the county. Whenever Publix and United Way get the opportunity to link up in partnership to do good in our community, everyone wins."
- What focus areas are you most passionate about improving in Hernando?
"I am personally most passionate about increasing awareness and access to mental health resources. There are so many out there who are suffering in silence and continue to do so simply because they don't know where to turn or how to go about receiving help. United Way has already made such impactful strides towards this goal in their work with NAMI Hernando and advocating for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline."

Stress Management
Stress is a fact of life. Overbooked schedules, demanding work hours, long commutes, an outburst by an angry boss, a stand-off with a defiant teenage child and the bad news that makes headlines every day are all contributors to the increased stress that many feel. Now more than ever it is important to recognize signs of stress in ourselves, our families and our communities and take the necessary steps to reduce stress and intervene if needed.
