GETTING TO KNOW OUR BOARD

BOARD Member Highlight

United Way of Hernando County's Board of Directors is full of dedicated community members and leaders. For this #UNITED News release, we are highlighting United Way Board Member Frank Cassara from Centennial Bank.

  • Why is LIVING UNITED through United Way important to you?

"For many years, the United Way has been a leader in ensuring that our community strives, and thrives. This comes from unity. Our local United Way exemplifies what a good neighbor, mentor and advocate is. When we all pull together, everyone wins."

  • In your field, explain why you believe Centennial Bank and United Way work so well together as community partners.

"I am very fortunate to be with a company that wants to see our community live up to its full potential. As a Centennial Banker, I am encouraged to give back and utilize resources wisely. Centennial Bank and the United Way share a vision in having an empowered community through compassion, assistance and encouragement."

  • What focus areas are you most passionate about improving in Hernando?

"Everyone living to their full potential. Imagine a community where people are held back simply because there were not available resources just to give that one boost to help them reach their goals? We are so fortunate that we have a community of generous business leaders, caring and active leadership, and compassionate neighbors."

Greek Festival

Opa! The 12th Annual Hernando County Greek Festival was 2/3 & 2/4. Over 45 volunteers loved immersing themselves into Greek culture, indulged in delicious food, and were able to give back to their community in a fun, meaningful way. From assisting with kitchen prep and setup to serving mouthwatering Greek cuisine, this was an all hands on deck event! United Way's Student Board oversaw the Family Fun Zone and helped children with arts and crafts activities.

POWERFUL PACE-SETTERS

(pictured left to right) West Hernando District Manager David Gonzalez, Manager of Member Relations Gary Steele, United Way CEO Angie B. Walasek, Executive Vice President & General Manager of WREC David Lambert, United Way Board Members Eric Vanderham and Frank Cassara.

On January 12th, Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative presented United Way with a generous contribution of $24,760! This annual investment is made up of WREC employee donations and a dollar-for-dollar corporate match. “This Proud Partnership is much more than the record-breaking pledges and donations WREC provides every year – our team is truly proud of the relationships we have grown with what we call, the WRECking Crew! Having the opportunity to educate WREC team members each year on the services United Way provides, people we help, and resources that are readily available when they encounter someone in need."

Does YOUR Company LIVE UNITED?

Meet Jaima! She is one of our many dedicated United Way volunteers and was out at the Greek Festival with us earlier this month!

Regions' very own Sandra Wall, can be found preparing taxes for local residents like a boss at our United Way Office as an IRS Certified VITA Volunteer!

Local community partner Dana Cutlip, with Cutlip Financial Services, stopped by the office with Kickball Sponsorship money and bacon!

(we gladly accepted both)

PREFERRED PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

United Way of Hernando County is powered by partnerships. Although United Way's Business Blitz Challenge takes place annually in the month of June, our Preferred Partners who "accept" The Challenge are supported and featured year-round!

  • How long has Pathways Counseling Center been in operation?

"Pathways Counseling Center has been operating since 1991 when Nancy Makar began this private practice for mental health counseling. I took ownership of Pathways back in 2023, where I had been a part of Pathways since 2008. We currently have 11 therapists working under Pathways who cover working with children as young as 3 years old through play therapy, couples and family counseling, and all the way to seniors struggling with medical complications and everything in between."

  • What services is Pathways Counseling Center best known for?

"Pathways works with the majority of the community of Hernando County and neighboring counties. We are one of few counseling services nearby who take most major insurances including Medicare and Medicaid. This is imperative because there are many people struggling here in Hernando who cannot find services which take their insurance."

  • What is something the community might not know about Pathways Counseling Center?

"Pathways Counseling Center is one of longest running mental health practices in Hernando County (open since 1991). We work to remain involved in the community by having partnered with Boys and Girls Club and Tobacco Free Florida, being a Hernando Chamber of Commerce member, and supporting important agencies of the community like United Way of Hernando, The Dawn Center, and NAMI."

  • Pathways Counseling Center is a supporter of United Way through their annual BUSINESS BLITZ CHALLENGE since 2023! What drives your practice to stay involved locally?

"It is important for Pathways Counseling Center to give back to the community and connect with other agencies like United Way of Hernando. We all entered our profession at Pathways to help people and their families. Being involved in the community is the extension of the help we can provide. It is also important to understand that we as a community united are much stronger than any one of our services individually."

  • Is there anything else you want to share with the community about the Pathways Counseling Centers?

"At Pathways Counseling Center, we have made it our mission to be as available as possible to our future and present clients. We have real staff members who pick up the phones directly, not an automated system. If they happen to be on another line with a client during the time you call, we will call the you back as soon as possible. We have also added flexibility to those who may have a difficult time coming to our office by offering counseling through teletherapy. Being accepted is important and we strive to provide that to all our clients."

This is a wonderful resource to place in the hands of our residents. Those who do not have access to the internet or simply aren't aware of the available options here in Hernando will really benefit from these booklets.

Stress Management

Stress is a fact of life. Overbooked schedules, demanding work hours, long commutes, an outburst by an angry boss, a stand-off with a defiant teenage child and the bad news that makes headlines every day are all contributors to the increased stress that many feel. Now more than ever it is important to recognize signs of stress in ourselves, our families and our communities and take the necessary steps to reduce stress and intervene if needed.
