GETTING TO KNOW OUR BOARD

BOARD Member Highlight

United Way of Hernando County's Board of Directors is full of dedicated community members and leaders. For this #UNITEDNews release, we are highlighting United Way Board Member and Board Treasurer Jim Aten, Raymond James Branch Manager.

  • Why is LIVING UNITED through United Way important to you?

"In a world where there is so much conflict, road rage ….the message is important. United Way identifies and addresses so many diverse unmet needs. From 211, to VITA, to helping partner agencies, ALICE, Dementia caregiver needs, and mobilizing resources for emergency storm response. It is amazing the breadth of the community impact that United Way Hernando county has."

  • In your field, explain why you believe Raymond James and United Way work so well together as community partners.

"Part of the culture at Raymond James is that the communities we work in have always been good to us, and is incumbent on all of us to give back. The firm was founded in 1962, and the partnership with United Way started in 1970. It was initiated by our then young CEO Tom James, and has always been enthusiastically supported by the top management ever since."

  • What focus areas are you most passionate about improving in Hernando?

"The focus are that I am most passionate about is helping the ALICE population. By supporting people who are hard working contributors to society, we make the community a better place. The process in place to be sure that help is solving problems , and not just providing hand outs is very impressive."

CHAMPIONS OF EARLY LITERACY

On April 6, 2024, United Way hosted their 9th Annual "KICK" Start to Early Literacy Kickball Tournament. After a long afternoon of local Hernando businesses vying for the Ultimate Traveling Trophy, the final matchup came down between Downtown Athletics “Tangerine Dream Team” with Celebrity Coach Christa Tanner and Barrette Outdoor Living’s “Barrette Knights” with Celebrity Coach Joel Fritton. It was a close and intense game, but in the end Barrette Outdoor Living’s “Barrette Knights” were crowned the victors and the 2024 Kickball Champions with a score of 1-0!

The Kickball Tournament's purpose is to support early literacy and continue to provide Hernando preschool children free books to help them grow their own little library and prepare them for kindergarten. Thanks to supporters of United Way’s "KICK" Start to Early Literacy Kickball Tournament, we were able to raise over 889 1-year scholarships, which is equivalent to 10,668 books! All proceeds benefit United Way’s Dolly Parton Imagination Library program, currently providing over 1,050 Hernando children with a free book every month from birth to age of five. The books are mailed directly to enrolled children regardless of their family’s economic status. #Ballin4Books

FEATURED NEWS

Denim Day takes place on the last Wednesday of April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This day of action encourages everyone to wear denim to combat victim blaming and educate others about sexual violence. Why Denim?

PROGRAM MYTH BUSTERS

If you work closely with any non-profit agency, you may notice a common trend when it comes making it their mission to educate. Educate clients on how to qualify for their services. Educate residents on where their generous donations go. And educate communities at large who they are as an organization and their purpose. While navigating this outreach effort to educate, our dedicated teams are often faced with busting myths. “I thought you did this?” We’re here to set the record straight through our UNITED WAY MYTH BUSTERS SERIES. Each month we will feature select United Way Partner Programs, highlighting their common “myths” and how you can help be an advocate to educate.

THANK YOU HIGHLIGHTS

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

Community Foundation of Tampa bay recently approved UWHC's $15,000 grant request for our early literacy initiative. With a vision of building a better community for the Tampa Bar area, Hernando's Dolly Parton Imagination Library now has additional financial support to enroll local preschool children in this 5-year early education program. THANK YOU!

Suncoast Credit Union has been a loyal supporter of United Way, recently granting UWHC $5,000 through their Foundation! With their mission to promote the education, health, and emotional well-being of children in the community they service, enhancing UW's early literacy initiative and receiving direct results from our READ to ME Parent/Caregiver Survey was in line with their vision to bridge the gap in access to care.

Stress Management

Stress is a fact of life. Overbooked schedules, demanding work hours, long commutes, an outburst by an angry boss, a stand-off with a defiant teenage child and the bad news that makes headlines every day are all contributors to the increased stress that many feel. Now more than ever it is important to recognize signs of stress in ourselves, our families and our communities and take the necessary steps to reduce stress and intervene if needed.
