At United Way, we fight for the Health, Education, and Financial Stability of every person in our community.
Doing so, we continue to assess the unmet needs Hernando faces and directly assist residents in crisis with wraparound services. Our team advocates on behalf of those in need of help, and in need of hope. Through our Community Investment Grant (CIG) process, United Way approved and will strategically invest over $110,000 into programs, services, and partnerships that align with our initiative goals this 2023-2024 FY.
Now more than ever, the community's support for our organization and local programs, as well as financial resources, are critically needed. It is a large thanks to dedicated Partners, loyal donors & active supporters that we are able to continue doing what we do best... and that's help Hernando.

Getting to Know Our Board:
BOARD CHAIR
United Way of Hernando County's Board of Directors have elected Eric Vanderham as the 2023-2024 Board Chair. Eric is the AVP Regional Executive for Grow Financial Federal Credit Union and a proud Hernando County resident. He began his journey with United Way over 5 years ago by serving as a Community Investment Grant Review Team Member, and joined the Board shortly after in July of 2020. Eric is a dedicated volunteer and a passionate advocate.
- Why is LIVING United through United Way important to you?
Because the United Way has a great ability to unite people and help lift them up. Hernando County’s United Way does a great job of partnering with business and organizations, helping connect clients & residents with resources. These connections allow numerous residents find the help they are searching for. Without United Way, I believe a lot of residents in Hernando would struggle and possibly not know that a solution/resources are sometimes just a short phone call away.
- What focus areas are you most passionate about improving in Hernando?
My passion is around childhood education here in Hernando County. I love supporting the annual United Way Kickball Tournament because it helps provide free educational books to kids in Hernando. These books help children learn to read, improve imagination, and help with their overall education. I also love supporting the great projects the United Way runs/supports to help our local youth. Each year they do an amazing job with Stuff the Bus to ensure our educators have the supplies needed to properly prepare students, they do food drives and support local food banks to ensure food security, and they partner numerous others to ensure that kids have a safe place to live. My other focus area is our local ALICE population. Currently we have a large number of residents that fall into this category and through the United Way programs, and some financial literacy, we can help ensure that all residents of Hernando County can live a life where one major event, like a car breaking down, can threaten their ability to put food on the table or a roof over their head.

All the Latest: Keeping up with United Way
Business Blitz Challenge
For the month of June, United Way of Hernando County and their Community Challengers at Centennial Bank, challenged Hernando businesses to join their efforts in mobilizing resources for local unmet needs by “Accepting the Challenge”. Thanks to the generous contributions from local businesses, United Way surpassed their goal, including a $5,000 match from Challengers at Centennial Bank, with a total raised of $11,400! Accepting the Challenge is so much more than a donation. These businesses know what it takes to prosper and want every individual and family to have access to the care and resources they need. When you are in need of a local service and in search of a reliable company, consider referring to United Way’s Preferred Partners list. Preferred Partners recognize the value in giving to United Way and know that their donation will be hard at work, helping make a difference through Health, Education, Financial Stability, & Basic Needs/Crisis Prevention services in Hernando County.

17th Annual Stuff the Bus
Every summer, United Way of Hernando County places school buses throughout the community at participating Publix and Walmart stores for their annual Stuff the Bus. This education initiative focuses on providing local teachers and their classrooms the tools needed for the new school year.
School bus locations are manned with dedicated Hernando teachers and volunteers to collect donated school supplies for Hernando County classrooms. Returning volunteer and local Pine Grove Elementary School teacher, Tasheba Kimble shared, “I think that Stuff the Bus is a great way to raise awareness for my classroom needs, but more importantly my student’s needs. Because of this initiative, teachers can ensure that their students are fully prepared with the supplies necessary to have a successful school year!” Ms. Kimble explained, “It’s such an amazing way for residents to connect with teachers face to face, and directly hear about their classrooms.”
Over the course of the July 7th Stuff the Bus weekend, teachers from 21 Hernando schools and other community partners volunteered their time and collected over 5,751 lbs. of school supplies to be distributed back to local classrooms!

Tampa Hope
As the number of homeless families continue to increase in Hernando, United Way is joined by partners from the Hernando Homeless Initiative to ensure that the conversation around preventative and proactive approaches are taken for these struggling individuals. On July 20th, team members jumped at the opportunity to tour the Tampa Hope facility in hopes of exploring a similar initiative for our Hernando community.
Tampa Hope is a Catholic Charities operated shelter presently serving 100+ homeless adults (18 or older) with plans to expand to 325. Their goal is to assist these women and men in achieving permanent housing and
self-sufficiency in 4-6 months and will extend this timeframe as necessary, provided clients are progressing and following the prescribed service plan of action to achieve the end-goal of self-sufficiency. To do so, they provide the following basic assistance in addition to shelter: three meals a day, toiletries (hygiene items), clothing, access to restrooms, showers and laundry facilities.
Additionally, case managers and housing specialists help clients navigate services to obtain permanent housing, including basic health and dental care, mental health and substance abuse counseling, employment skills and assistance, education assistance, and more (e.g., financial literacy training).
More to come! Interested in joining this conversation around solutions? Attend the next Hernando Homeless Initiative Meeting on August 22nd at 3:30pm at the Chamber of Commerce.

Stress Management
Stress is a fact of life. Overbooked schedules, demanding work hours, long commutes, an outburst by an angry boss, a stand-off with a defiant teenage child and the bad news that makes headlines every day are all contributors to the increased stress that many feel. Now more than ever it is important to recognize signs of stress in ourselves, our families and our communities and take the necessary steps to reduce stress and intervene if needed.
