At United Way, we fight for the Health, Education, and Financial Stability of every person in our community.
During the first two weeks of September 2023 (9/1 - 9/17), United Way of Hernando County embarked on an inspiring journey with our annual Publix workforce campaign, under the theme "Unite to Inspire." Our dedicated Partner Agencies and esteemed board members took the stage at campaign meetings to share their passion for our mission.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all Publix associates for their unwavering dedication to Hernando County. Your support and generosity make a profound impact on our community, enabling us to create positive change and inspire hope for a brighter future. Together, we stand united, ready to inspire and uplift the lives of those who need it most. Thank you for being the driving force behind our mission.

- Why is LIVING United through United Way important to you?
It has always been important for me to participate in activities that help my community and I have volunteered with many agencies through the years. Being on the Board of Directors for United Way Hernando has allowed me to support my community on a much larger scale. The United Way really lives its mission to mobilize resources and effectively brings all sectors of our community together to improve the quality of life in Hernando County. I am thrilled to be a part of the team with such a great mission and vision.
- In your field, explain why you would believe PHSC and United Way work so well together as community partners.
I work in higher education and United Way Hernando understands how important education is to a healthy community and individual. Education helps pave the path to health, financial stability, basic needs, and a in turn allows us to better participate in a thriving community. United Way is forward-thinking and always ready to move the needle with these goals in their planning.
- What focus areas are you most passionate about improving in Hernando?
I am passionate about improving access to education that supports career paths to independence. The workforce and economic development in Hernando are critical to the health of its citizens. United Way Hernando shares these goals with health, education, financial stability, and basic needs/crisis prevention. I am so proud to be a part of an agency that has such a vast reach and great influence on the community.

Responding to Hurricane Idalia
Hernando's COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster) has met monthly for the past 3 years, as a disaster planning initiative. This group consists of over 50 local Hernando health & human service agencies dedicated to planning & preparedness, trend tracking, and proactive partnership building. In the wake of Hurricane Idalia, and in partnership with Hernando County Emergency Management, United Way quickly activated the Family Resource Center (FRC).
The FRC was hosted at the Weeki Wachee Area Club for two weeks, and served as a resource hub for individuals and families directly impacted by Hurricane Idalia. COAD Partners such as United Way, Health & Human Services, American Red Cross, CareerSource, NAMI Hernando, Department of Health, DCF, Baycare, CERT, and more were stationed at the Area Club so residents didn't have to go far to receive relief information, supplies, support, and hope.
FRC AT A GLANCE (please note that this snap shot does not capture all assistance provided):
-
Assisted in processing 28 FEMA Application
-
Equipped 83 households with essential Clean-Up Supplies
-
Distributed Non-perishable Food Items & Meals to 44 households
-
Logged 9 Crisis CleanUps
-
Connected 8 individuals to Employment Services

"Give Thanks, Give Food" Drive
During the month of October, United Way of Hernando County will be hosting its 4th Annual “Give Thanks, Give Food” drive. This county-wide effort will benefit five local food pantries and shelters in Hernando County: Dawn Center’s Domestic Violence Shelter, St. Vincent de Paul’s Food Pantry, People Helping People’s Weekend Blessings program, Youth & Family Alternative’s New Beginning’s Youth Shelter, and Mid Florida Homeless Coalition’s outreach efforts.
The non-perishable food donations collected will be sorted, packed, and distributed to the agencies as part of United Way’s month-long “5 Days of Caring” in November.
United Way invites all Community Partners and Local Organizations to help make a meaningful impact this October by becoming a collection site! By opening your doors to collect non-perishable food items, you'll be playing a vital role in ensuring that individuals in our community have food during the holiday season.

Dear Grandparent/Guardian,
We recognize the crucial role grandparents play in children's lives. For those who are primary guardians, it comes with unique joys and challenges. On behalf of United Way of Hernando County, and Hernando Schools, we invite grandparents to offer insight into ways you could be better supported.
The purpose of this brief and anonymous survey is to gather feedback from our grandparents to identify ways the school district and United Way of Hernando could extend support to grandparents raising their grandchildren.

Stress Management
Stress is a fact of life. Overbooked schedules, demanding work hours, long commutes, an outburst by an angry boss, a stand-off with a defiant teenage child and the bad news that makes headlines every day are all contributors to the increased stress that many feel. Now more than ever it is important to recognize signs of stress in ourselves, our families and our communities and take the necessary steps to reduce stress and intervene if needed.
