Hello Lobo Fan!

We're back from Madison and....Welcome to Rivalry Week. The grass is a little greener and the pads have been cracking a little louder this week. We're excited for this group of student-athletes to travel down I-25 for the 109th edition of the Rio Grande Rivalry.

As you might expect, this edition of Cherry Zone will focus on some of the history behind the Rio Grande Rivalry while also bringing to life the good stuff from our recent road trip and from our Pro'Bos.

Lobos Head to Las Cruces for the 109th Chapter in Rivalry

That's right - its the 109th time we'll face that team from down south. The series first began on January 1st, 1894 - 18 years before New Mexico gained statehood - with your Lobos winning 25-5. The series then took a short hiatus before it began again with consistency in 1905. Overall, your New Mexico Lobos lead the series 70-33-5.

Let's looks back at some Pro'Bos History

Rivalry Week is a great time to look back at some of the past Lobo greats and see what they're up to today. We've had some big news from several past Lobo legends!

Glover Quin, DB, 2006-2009

Glover Quin player for the Lobos from 2006-2009 and during his UNM tenure, he never lost a Rio Grande Rivalry game.

As a sophomore Quin received an Honorable Mention on the All Mountain West Conference team. Quin led the MWC with 12 pass break-ups and was second in the league. During his Junior season, Quin received Honorable Mention on the All Mountain West conference Team. For his senior year, Quin was selected as a first team All Mountain West Conference player. That season, he was voted MVP by his teammates.

Here's the 2018 headline for Glover:

Quin, who currently roams the secondary for the Detroit Lions, was named a team captain for the 2018 season - not surprising considering his success in the NFL.

Glover was drafted in the 4th round with the 112th pick by the Houston Texans. In 2012 he joined the Detroit Lions where he earned Pro Bowl honors in 2014.

Wish Robin Cole a Happy Birthday

Robin Cole was born on September 11, 1955 and played for the Lobos from 1973-1976, going 3-1 against the team from down south. You see his name on Dreamstyle stadium on gameday!

Cole was an All-American and the 1st first round draft pick out of the UNM. Cole was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers and was a two time Super Bowl Champions (Super Bowl XIII and XIV) as a linebacker on the "Steel Curtain" Defense.

UNM Hall of Honor Includes Two Football Alums

Sam Scarber will be an inductee of the UNM Hall of Honor's 2018 class. Sam played for the Lobos from 1968-1971 (going 2-1-1 in the rivalry)

In 1969 he was the team's leading rushed recorded a school record 38 carries in a game. In 1970, Scarber was the conference leading rusher (961 yard with a 5.2 average). He set season school records in scoring with 13 touchdowns and received All-WAC honors. In 1971, Scarber was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round (69th overall) NFL Draft.

Did you know? He is now a Hollywood actor with roles in

Over the Top (1987) The Karate Kid (1984) and Eraser (1996).

Our friend and play-by-play Lobo radio announcer, Dontrell Moore. will be an inductee in the Hall of Honor. Moore played for the Lobos from 2000-2004. As a redshirt freshman, Moore earned Conference Freshman of the Year honors, concluding his freshman year with 1134 yards and 13 touchdowns. As a sophomore, Moore earned unanimous All-Mountain West Conference honors while setting personal and school rushing records with 1450 yards and 276 carriers (top rusher in the conference). His Senior year, he was recognized by the NFL Draft Report and Sports Illustrated. Moore was named in the All-Mountain West Conference team and earned the Offensive Player of the Year. Dontrell went 3-1 in his career in the rivalry game.

From Childhood Friends to Competitors

Last Saturday's game versus Wisconsin was a unique opportunity for two Rockford, Illinois natives to match up against each other. New Mexico’s Marcus Hayes and Wisconsin’s Bryson Williams grew up together in the Forest City before Williams moved and attended high school in Nebraska. Hayes made a name for himself with Lutheran and East in high school before suiting up for the Lobos. They shared an embrace on the field after the game, just like old times.
