UNM Rainforest Innovations Welcomes New Board Member |
Douglas Ziedonis, M.D., M.P.H.
Dr. Ziedonis was appointed Executive Vice President (EVP) of UNM Health Sciences and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the UNM Health System on December 1, 2020. He is the executive leader for the UNM Health Sciences Center, which includes the education, research, clinical, and community activities of UNM Health Sciences and the UNM Health System.

UNM Business and Economic Summit a Success |
UNM Rainforest Innovations hosted the third UNM Business and Economic Summit on January 12. The purpose of the event was to continue a statewide dialogue about ways to grow our New Mexico economy and our innovation ecosystem. Themed, “New Mexico 2030,” the goal was to convene stakeholders (public, private and non-profit) from across New Mexico. Recognizing the progress that the state has made to date, the Summit envisioned economic growth in New Mexico. The summit was based around the New Mexico Chamber of Commerce’s strategic plan, “Driving New Mexico’s Future: Empowering a Competitive Economy in a Post-Pandemic World”.

Jennifer M. Gillette, Ph.D.

The University of New Mexico
Dr. Gillette’s research program uses a combinatorial approach to investigate how cell communication within the bone marrow microenvironment serves to regulate healthy and malignant hematopoietic stem cells. Their goal is to identify molecules and mechanisms that can be directly targeted to 1) improve regenerative stem cell therapies and 2) treat the progression of specific cancers.

Receive Entrepreneurial Training, Mentoring & $3,000!
Do you have an idea for a technology? Explore the transition of your technology to the marketplace through this entrepreneurial training program to help determine if your technology is ready for the market. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), this program’s purpose is to teach UNM faculty and students to identify market or product opportunities that can emerge from academic research or student ideas.
The online program will run on Mondays, 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. from February 22, 2021 – May 10, 2021 via Zoom meetings. No meeting will occur on March 15, 2021.
Deadline to apply to the Spring 2021 I-Corps program is February 7, 2021.

Dharish Totiger - Student Intellectual Property & Disclosures Assistant
|
Over the years, UNM Rainforest Innovations has trained hundreds of UNM students on university technology transfer and commercialization through its student internship program. Dharish Totiger assists with disclosures and patent assignments and reporting government funded inventions. He also works on prior art (novelty) searching, conducts market analysis for new technologies, identifies potential licensees, and develops marketing materials. “I mostly enjoy working with various aspects of marketing activities of new technologies. Also, I enjoy the opportunity to attend several informative seminars and webinars organized by UNMRI, which also serves as a platform for mentors and entrepreneurs to share their knowledge and experience.”

Mr. Stacy Sacco teaches entrepreneurial studies at the Anderson School of Management, serves as the Director of the UNM Small Business Institute and is President of Sacco Connections, a management consulting firm.
Mr. Sacco will be available for one-on-one mentoring where he will give guidance, coaching and perspective to enhance entrepreneurship and provide connections to resources at UNM and in the community. There are many resources available to those who have ideas that they may want to turn into a business!
