Local Tech Startup TS-Nano Receives Job Training Funds |
|
TS-Nano, an Albuquerque-based startup commercializing technology developed at the University of New Mexico (UNM), has been selected as part of nine companies throughout New Mexico to received funds through the Job Training Incentive Program (JTIP). This program supports the growth and development of New Mexico businesses by covering a portion trainee wages for up to six months.
TS-Nano designs, manufactures, and applies durable nano-modified polymer sealants to a variety of sub-surfaces to seal again Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. Their team has extensive experience in nanotechnology and manufacturing along with intensive engineering capabilities to solve the most challenging GHG leaks. The technology was developed by University of New Mexico by lead inventor Dr. Mahmoud Taha and his research team.

UNM Inventor Dr. Sakineh Chabi Receives 2023 AFOSR Young Investigator Award |
|
|
|
Dr. Sakineh Chabi is the recipient of the 2023 Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Research Program (YIP) award. Honorees receive three-year grants of up to $450,000 and she is one of just 58 scientists and engineers chosen for the award.
Dr. Chabi serves as an assistant professor in the University of New Mexico Department of Mechanical Engineering and her research areas include two-dimensional silicon carbide, graphene technology, and energy storage and conversion.

Rainforest Accelerator Program Trains Fall 2022 Cohort |
|
Selected teams receive $3,000 in seed-funding to support market discovery efforts and proof-of-concept prototyping and they also learn how to determine value propositions, customers, size of market, and market trends for their respective technologies. Each team consists of UNM faculty, staff and/or students, entrepreneurs, and a mentor provided by the program.
The teams that participated in the fall 2022 cohort included:
- Energy Creating Arts – creating novel forms of art and a new way to experience existing art for pure enjoyment and novel forms of experience.
- Troy – smart wall projector.
- The E-Cage – biofeedback arm sling device to aid in elbow joint rehabilitation exercises.
- LoJo Engineering – ChemiPattern tech is a new way to control chemistry by localizing pH, redistributing charge, and patterning solubility of wet chemical reactions in-situ, i.e. sol-gel process.
- Team DM – a magnetic snare catheter system.
- AM Team – 3D concrete printer conveyer hose.
- AHP Pump – an automated, inexpensive, high-pressure, customizable pump system that can serve as a multi-use pump, capable of pumping fluids with high densities/viscosity or fluids containing particles or micelles.
- Flow Aluminum – grid-level energy storage.

Taniela Cox
Accounting Student Intern
Our featured intern this month is Taniela Cox who joined UNM Rainforest Innovations in April 2022 as an Accounting Intern. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Entrepreneurship in 2020 from UNM and is currently working on a Master’s in Accounting.
As the Accounting Intern, Taniela provides general accounting support to the Accounting Manager and Accounting Coordinator. “Some of my responsibilities are updating spreadsheets when we receive income or pay inventors, entering invoices into QuickBooks, and covering the front desk sometimes. I love working in an environment that promotes cooperation and teamwork over competition, that is one big thing I appreciate about UNMRI.”
Taniela hopes to graduate in fall 2022 or spring 2023 and is interested in trying audit or tax accounting after graduate school. “I enjoy helping people and I’m already getting tax questions from friends and family.”
Growing up, Taniela spent part of his time in Albuquerque and the rest in Fiji. “It was a wonderful experience to grow up around my mother’s side of the family out there and I’m glad I picked up the Fijian language. My family traveled a lot growing up, so I went to online school until college. My love of business and accounting was definitely sparked by my father. He would relate a lot of our discussions to business concepts, and I’ve helped in one way or another in our family business for years now.”

Join Stacy Sacco to discuss your startup or idea and gain valuable resources.
For the past 20 years, Mr. Sacco has taught entrepreneurial studies at the UNM Anderson School of Management, and served as the Director of the UNM Small Business Institute. He currently is the President of Sacco Connections, a management consulting firm, and hosts a free, informational website, with 3,000+ links to local jobs, events and resources.
Mr. Sacco will be available for one-on-one mentoring where he will give guidance, coaching and perspective to enhance entrepreneurship and provide connections to resources at UNM and in the community. There are many resources available to those who have ideas that they may want to turn into a business!
These are hybrid office hours. Stacy will be available to meet IN-PERSON at the Lobo Rainforest Building or VIRTUALLY via Zoom depending on your own personal preferences.
