New UNMRI Startups to Receive Lucky Entrepreneur Coin™ in FY2025 | |

Starting July 1, UNM Rainforest Innovations will start giving out a Lucky Entrepreneur Coin™ to each newly founded startup company based on a University of New Mexico technology.
The Lucky Entrepreneur Coin™ was started by Right to Start, a campaign to rebuild the American economy by making entrepreneurial opportunity a top priority in every community. They drive civic change through grassroots organizing and mobilizing, policy advocacy and engagement, and lifting the voices of entrepreneurs through media and storytelling. The coins are an effort to support entrepreneurs and show support for their right to build their dreams.

How 5 UNM Inventions Could Change the World

Every day, faculty at The University of New Mexico work to uncover the next technological frontier and expand our knowledge about the world. The research conducted at UNM has led to the creation of brand-new inventions that have been licensed by companies for use around the world.
In this article, five UNM inventions are highlighted that could help change the world. UNM Rainforest Innovations (UNMRI), the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed and owned entirely by The University of New Mexico Board of Regents is dedicated to protecting and commercializing technology developed by The University. They’ve selected the following inventions as a brief sample of UNM’s diverse and extensive collection of patents.
The following patents were created by prolific inventors at UNM and have since been licensed by companies in and outside of New Mexico, often as part of large portfolios of related patents. Many of the patents listed were created by UNMRI’s Rainforest Innovation Fellows, inventors who have been awarded and honored for the significant commercialization of their work.

Cecilia (Pacheco) Becenti was recently inducted into the Albuquerque Business First’s 40 Under 40 Class of 2024. Every year a cohort of outstanding young professionals are highlighted for going above and beyond in their careers and for the support they provide to their communities.
Cecilia Pacheco Becenti serves as the Program Manager for the New Mexico Tribal Entrepreneurship Enhancement Program (NMTEEP). Funded by an American Rescue Plan Economic Adjustment Assistance (ARPA) grant administered by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA), the program seeks to create broader opportunity, wealth and job growth through enhancing entrepreneurship in tribal communities throughout New Mexico, especially those effected by coal mine closures.

John Boersma has been helping public and private organizations define and execute successful AI and machine learning projects for a decade. Most recently, as Director of Education for DataRobot, John led over one hundred leadership workshops to conceptualize, define, and prioritize AI initiatives with clients including Bank of America, Walmart Canada, Verizon, PwC South Africa, and a federal intelligence agency. He holds a PhD in Physics and an MBA in General Management.

Meet with SCORE mentors at the Lobo Rainforest Building! Dar Johnson and Vik Berniklau will be available for one-on-one, confidential discussions and mentoring to inventors, students, and start-up companies.
SCORE mentors are successful business people and entrepreneurs who want to give back to the community by helping other entrepreneurs become and stay successful. SCORE has been helping small businesses start and grow in the Albuquerque area for over 50 years through mentoring and workshops and seminars. SCORE is the largest National resource partner of the Small Business Administration (SBA) with about 11,000 SCORE volunteers sharing their time and talents to help America's small businesses.

He has been responsible for achieving growth nation-wide, obtaining new customers, cost containment, turning around marginal operations, increased profitability, customer satisfaction, staffing, and policy and procedure development. He also has worked in business development, proposal support, capture manager and proposal manager. He has owned a successful consulting business.

Vic Berniklau is retired from the US Department of Energy as Senior Executive after filling positions in Technical and Administrative Leadership. Started two small businesses in electronic security with wife and son growing them to 30 employees ($2M sales) and turned them over to son who continues to grow them. Consultant in technology management and business management. Instructor at University of New Mexico at Graduate Level in Public Administration (Research Methodology) and Business Administration (Management of Technology).
