UNM Rainforest Innovations Announces 2022 Gap Funding for Four Proposals |
This year marks UNM Rainforest Innovations’ eleventh call for proposals to further develop an early-stage, unlicensed UNM technology previously disclosed to UNM Rainforest Innovations. Funds are used to support the development of a UNM technology to increase its chances of being successfully licensed by industry or to become the basis of a new start-up company. Each one-year proposal can be funded up to $25,000.

UNM Startup Armonica Reports $2M Series B Round from Local Investors and Japanese Lighting Company |
Armonica Technologies, Inc. is an Albuquerque-based biotechnology company commercializing an innovative DNA nanopore sequencing technology for precision medicine research applications developed at the University of New Mexico. They have recently announced their $2M Series B round and contributors include local venture capital firms Cottonwood Technology Fund, Sun Mountain Capital, and Tramway Venture Partners and a lighting company based out of Japan called Hamamatsu Photonic K.K. Armonica was also awarded a $350,000 SBIR grant earlier this year from the NIH’s National Human Genome Research Institute to support further development of their technology.

Mathis Shinnick – Director of Corporate Engagement
Mathis Shinnick serves as the Director of Corporate Engagement for UNM Rainforest Innovations. He is a globally experienced and versatile executive with a proven track record of building, managing, and sustaining profitable ventures. As the Director of Corporate Engagement, he plans, develops, and manages external outreach initiatives and partnerships on behalf of UNM Rainforest Innovations and the University of New Mexico.
Mathis has an M.B.A from ASU’s Thunderbird School of Global Management and B.B.A in Accounting from UNM’s Anderson School of Management.

Rebecca Tresise – Accounting Coordinator
Becca joined UNM Rainforest Innovations as a Student Office Assistant in June 2021 and currently serves as the Accounting Coordinator. Becca is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a minor in business management at the University of New Mexico and also plans to pursue an M.B.A.

Local Startup Nob Hill Therapeutics Developing Innovative Dry Powder Nebulizer |
Nob Hill Therapeutics is a local startup developing DryNeb™, the first dry powder nebulizer for the treatment of severe respiratory diseases. Their nebulizer works to rapidly deliver high dose drugs with higher efficiency than current dry powder inhalers. Part of the VIC Technology Venture Development, a technology commercialization organization, Nob Hill currently licenses technology developed out of the University of New Mexico through UNM Rainforest Innovations.

Mr. Wilton offers significant experience as an executive in national and multi-national companies in both the UK and the USA. He has worked in all regions across the globe, with different companies and cultures. During this tenure Phil encountered many business pivots, mergers and acquisitions and disruption and inflection points that impacted businesses.

Drew Tulchin, President of New Mexico Angels, is very active with New Mexico start-ups. Most notably with Meow Wolf, serving as their first CFO, a New Mexico B Corp that creates immersive arts experiences to wow. His efforts there, among others, led to raising more than $125 million in investment, purchase of a new headquarters, and growth from 50 people to more than 400. He has also worked with Build with Robots, Electric Playhouse, and Parting Stone.

Mr. Stacy Sacco teaches entrepreneurial studies at the Anderson School of Management, serves as the Director of the UNM Small Business Institute and is President of Sacco Connections, a management consulting firm.
Mr. Sacco will be available for one-on-one mentoring where he will give guidance, coaching and perspective to enhance entrepreneurship and provide connections to resources at UNM and in the community. There are many resources available to those who have ideas that they may want to turn into a business!

SCORE's mentors (https://albuquerque.score.org/) are successful business people and entrepreneurs who want to give back to the community by helping other entrepreneurs become and stay successful. SCORE has been helping small businesses start and grow in the Albuquerque area for over 50 years through mentoring and workshops and seminars. SCORE is the largest National resource partner of the Small Business Administration (SBA) with about 11,000 SCORE volunteers sharing their time and talents to help America's small businesses.
