As a 2017 Innovation Fellow, Dr. Chackerian is recognized as a pioneering innovator in developing the next generation of vaccines for viruses, pathogens and chronic diseases and a dedicated mentor to the next generation of vaccine researchers. Dr. Chackerian has been working on vaccine development using nanoparticle-based platforms for over 20 years. The overall aim of his work is to develop simple, effective vaccines that make an impact on human health worldwide.

Mr. Stacy Sacco teaches entrepreneurial studies at the Anderson School of Management, serves as the Director of the UNM Small Business Institute and is President of Sacco Connections, a management consulting firm.
Mr. Sacco will be available for one on one mentoring where he will give guidance, coaching and perspective to enhance entrepreneurship and provide connections to resources at UNM and in the community. Mr. John Chavez served as the President of the New Mexico Angels from 2008 – 2020 and has been an active angel investor since 2003. Mr. Chavez is also the Managing Director of Phase One Ventures, a start-up fund out of Santa Fe, NM, and Managing Director of New Mexico Start-Up Factory I and II. Outside of the Angels, he is the President of Tafoya and Brainerd Partners, LLC, a nationwide business development-consulting firm. Prior to his work in consulting, Mr. Chavez was appointed Cabinet Secretary of the Taxation and Revenue Department by New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson. During his six-year tenure as tax secretary he also served as the President of the Federation of Taxation Administrators for one year.

Mrs. Susan Cornelius is the Principal of Accelerate2Solutions, an innovative, small, high tech company focused on creating successful, lean start-ups. Susan has coached more than 71 companies, and created seven start-up companies, ranging from $500M to $150,000, helping them emerge as successful high tech, and life and health sciences companies. Susan brings 30 years of experience in start-ups, mergers, acquisitions, and successful, entrepreneurship in healthcare, research, enterprise software service solutions, medical devices, national defense, and high tech sensing devices for homeland security.
Susan is the site mentor for UNM-Valencia. She is available as an interface for any questions and to serve as a connection point for resources related to your entrepreneurial endeavors or training.

For over twenty years, Dr. Larry Sklar has dedicated himself as an inventor to making high-throughput flow cytometry the benchmark for flow cytometry technology. For nearly as long, as the director of the UNM Center for Molecular Discovery, he has made New Mexico internationally known as a hub for flow cytometry research and technologies. HyperCyt-based systems are now finding their way into mainstream screening labs. In doing this, he has given a tool to researchers everywhere to discover more effective ways to understand and treat cancers, infectious diseases and many other biological applications, and built multiple teams of inventors and innovators along the way that are reflected in his patent portfolio and commercialization activity.

The University of New Mexico's Innovation Academy and UNM Rainforest Innovations (formerly known as STC.UNM) are offering a special course to help New Mexico businesses at this critical time for our state's economic recovery. This is made possible through a grant from the Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration called the NM EDA Rainforest University Center.

Six researchers will present spanning life-science and physical-science technologies. This virtual event will bring together entrepreneurs, investors, and industry representatives to learn more about commercialization opportunities. |

Deconstructing Products and Services: How Innovation Produces Value

Many successful products and services resulting from innovation is no different from the innovation that takes place on University campuses. This presentation will look at some well-known products and services and the innovation that produced them.
The presentation will also cover how University innovation is most likely Disruptive Innovation, the most valuable form of innovation, and Social Innovation (whose objective is to solve community-wide problems) can produce a wide range of intellectual properties that help produce value and achieve the goals of the innovation effort.

|
Dr. David Whitten has over 50 year of experience as a scientist and an academic. He joined the University of New Mexico in 2005 and has since excelled as an inventor, disclosing 33 technologies and has received 17 issued patents. He was selected as a Distinguished Professor in 2016 and is the Associate Director for the Center for Biomedical Engineering. He also serves as Associate Editor for ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces.
