UNM Researcher Teams Up with FYR Diagnostics to Develop Diagnostic Test for Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome |
Ludmila Bakhireva, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H. from the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center has teamed up with Montana-based company FYR Diagnostics and Dr. Rajesh C. Miranda from Texas A&M University to develop a diagnostic test for Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS). The team was awarded a three-year Fast-Track Phase I/II SBIR award by the National Institute of Drug Abuse.

Local Startup Armonica Technologies Awarded $2M NIH Grant |
Armonica Technologies, Inc., a local startup commercializing technology developed at the University of New Mexico, has been awarded a follow-up Phase II SBIR grant from the NIH’s National Human Genome Research Institute. The grant will help the company further develop a novel DNA sequencing system based on single molecule spectroscopy.

|
Pajarito Powder, a local startup commercializing technologies developed at the University of New Mexico, has secured a new investor as part of their Series B investment round. The Belgium-based company, Bekaert, specializes in steel wire transformation and coating technologies.

On August 30, UNM Rainforest Innovations hosted a technology and startup showcase with the New Angels. Four researchers and inventors from the University of New Mexico were invited to pitch their innovations to an audience of investors, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and community members.

Global Ties ABQ Brings International Business Leaders to the Lobo Rainforest Building |
|
On August 22, Global Ties ABQ brought a group of 12 international business leaders to the Lobo Rainforest Building where Stacy Sacco gave a talk on how governments, universities, and academic institutions play a role in fostering entrepreneurship and supporting innovation.
Global Ties ABQ is nonprofit that works to build professional networks and meaningful global engagements by connecting New Mexico to emerging global leaders. The visitors were part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Leadership Program, and the topic of the visit was “Entrepreneurship as the Engine of Prosperity and Stability – Small Business Development in the Indo-Pacific.”

Meet UNMRI’s First Tribal Liaison Mytegia Lee for the New Mexico Tribal Entrepreneurship Enhancement Program |

UNM Rainforest Innovations is excited to welcome Mytegia Lee as the first Tribal Liaison for the New Mexico Tribal Entrepreneurship Enhancement Program.
UNM Rainforest Innovations was awarded an Economic Development Administration (EDA) American Rescue Plan Economic Adjustment Assistance grant in April to help break down barriers and generate opportunity through entrepreneurship in historically underserved communities in New Mexico with a primary focus on coal-impacted tribal communities.
Meet Ms. Mytegia Lee, Tribal Liaison for the Tribal Entrepreneurship Enhancement Program, Executive Director of the Southwest Native Assets Coalition (SNAC), and mentor for the UNM Rainforest Innovations’ University Center Program. Prior to joining SNAC, she worked in the commercial banking and financing services industry providing credit analysis, financial education as well as small dollar loan origination and servicing throughout Western New Mexico. Her diligence, attention to detail, and commitment to customer service reflect her sincere interest in helping rural households secure optimal economic opportunities and outcomes. Prior to working in the financial services sector, Ms. Lee worked as a social services liaison for the Eastern Agency of the Navajo Nation providing community members to burial assistance, low-income home energy assistance, and other emergency funding.

For the past 20 years, Mr. Stacy Sacco has taught entrepreneurial studies at the UNM Anderson School of Management, and served as the Director of the UNM Small Business Institute. He currently is the President of Sacco Connections, a management consulting firm, and hosts a free, informational website, with 3,000+ links to local jobs, events and resources.
Mr. Sacco will be available for one-on-one mentoring where he will give guidance, coaching and perspective to enhance entrepreneurship and provide connections to resources at UNM and in the community. There are many resources available to those who have ideas that they may want to turn into a business!

UNM Rainforest Innovations collaborates with SCORE to offer mentoring and confidential discussions for aspiring and established entrepreneurs, inventors, students, and start-up companies. SCORE’s certified mentors are successful business people and entrepreneurs with the goal of giving back to the community by helping other entrepreneurs become and stay successful. SCORE has been helping small businesses start and grow in the Albuquerque area for over 50 years through mentoring.

Dar Johnson
Dar retired after 20 years with the US Air Force and has over 36 years in the aerospace private sector including over 36 years in senior and “C-suite” level management positions. He has been responsible for achieving growth nation-wide, obtaining new customers, cost containment, turning around marginal operations, increased profitability, customer satisfaction, staffing, and policy and procedure development. He has also worked in business development, proposal support, capture manager and proposal manager and has owned a successful consulting business.

Vic Berniklau
Vic retired from the U.S. Department of Energy as Senior Executive after filling positions in Technical and Administrative Leadership. He started two small businesses in electronic security with his wife and son and grew them to 30 employees with $2M in sales. He is a consultant in technology management and business management and is an instructor at the University of New Mexico at the Graduate Level in Public Administration (Research Methodology) and Business Administration (Management of Technology).

UNM Rainforest Innovations and the UNM Health Sciences Center of Excellence for Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation is hosting the Orthopaedic Technology and Facility Showcase on October 13, 2022.
The new Center provides training for clinicians and researchers, featuring leading-edge virtual reality and 3D printing technology. The site also incorporates an innovation center to engage the community and industry in new initiatives for treatments and research, and where future partnerships can flourish.
