Collaborations Thrive Between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, UNM and UNM Rainforest Innovations

VA research stands out due to its unique strengths: a targeted focus on health issues that directly affect Veterans, the voluntary participation of thousands of VA patients in clinical studies each year, and a deeply integrated research infrastructure supported by partnerships with academic institutions and hospitals across the country. To help translate these research discoveries into real-world clinical applications, the VA’s Technology Transfer Program plays a crucial role in facilitating commercialization and partnerships.

One such collaborative partner is UNM Rainforest Innovations (UNMRI), the technology transfer and economic development arm for the University of New Mexico. UNMRI works closely with the VA to manage and commercialize jointly owned technologies resulting from their shared research efforts. To date, there are 61 jointly owned technologies and over the years 9 startup companies have been launched to bring some of these innovations to market.

“Our collaborations with academic partners like the University of New Mexico are critical to translating research discoveries into real-world solutions for both Veterans and the general public,” said Dr. John Kaplan, JD, Director of the VA Technology Transfer Program.

Attracting Foreign Investment to New Mexico

NM Bio Lunch & Learn

New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) Secretary Rob Black will discuss the state’s ambitious and multifaceted strategy for sowing the seeds for accelerated economic growth. Rob believes NM is on the cusp of significant economic expansion. He’ll detail the concrete steps being taken to transform the state’s economic landscape. A cornerstone of this strategy is the newly established NMexus Center. It's envisioned as a dedicated conduit for attracting foreign direct investment from companies ready to bring jobs and capital to New Mexico.

CTSC Translational Lab Enables Breakthrough in RNA Sequencing Technology

A promising new method for detecting ribonucleic acids emerged from research conducted at the University of New Mexico Clinical and Translational Science Center’s (CTSC) Translational Lab. This innovation, filed as a patent application titled “Methods and Systems for Detecting Ribonucleic Acids,” was developed through collaborative efforts between CTSC lab personnel and UNM Health Sciences researcher Christos Argyropoulos, MD, MS, PhD, FASN.

The CTSC Translational Laboratory (T-Laboratory) is comprised of 6,000 gsf of wet-lab space, located in the renovated UNM CTSC Building. The T-Laboratory offers state-of-the-art equipment and technical assistance with laboratory techniques for UNM HSC investigators.

For this particular project, CTSC Lab Personnel Susan Tigert and Debbie Lovato partnered with the investigator, Dr. Argyropoulos, to establish a new technique (long-read nucleic sequencing) at the T-Lab. The innovation provides a single tube protocol for the creation of libraries from RNAs (isolated from cells, extracellular media e.g. blood or urine) that allows the simultaneous detection of short and long RNAs using platforms for long RNA sequencing. Furthermore, they provided additional technical training to the investigator and his own lab staff, which allowed them to design and execute the experiments that produced the data that supported the patent application. Under the new opportunities of SW CACTI and the collaborations with the University of Arizona, it will be exciting to see what additional innovations can be developed.

Strategic Decision-Making for Start-up Founders, Funders, and Teams

UNM Rainforest Innovations Seminar

September 30 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. (MDT)

at the Lobo Rainforest Building and on Zoom

Enhancing Organizational Success through Science-Based Approaches

Effective decision-making and strategic thinking are vital to business success. Yet many organizations approach these processes without grounding them in the science of how systems actually behave in dynamic, complex environments. Complexity science—particularly the anthro-complexity approach—offers a robust framework for making sense of uncertainty and acting more effectively.

Drawing on two decades of experience with complexity-based tools, Dr. Sandra Martínez will:

  • Describe new ways of thinking about leadership and organizations grounded in complexity science
  • Explain the fundamentals of a complexity-informed approach to strategy and decision-making
  • Discuss its implications for organizations and startups navigating high uncertainty
  • Share a practical process for integrating complexity science into real-world decision-making
