Our Annual White Coat Ceremony took place on August 17 at the Michael F. Sorrell Events Center with a reception following in the UNMC Center for Drug Discovery and Lozier Center for Pharmacy Sciences and Education building.

Fifty-six students received their professional white laboratory jackets, provided by friends of the College of Pharmacy and the University of Nebraska Foundation, and took the pledge of professionalism.

Dean Courtney Fletcher welcomed the students. Joseph "Joe" Vetro, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, delivered the keynote presentation on "Being Professional."

Dr. Joe Vetro and Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Christopher Shaffer, Pharm.D., welcomed the class of 2021 to the Ceremony and assisted with the presentation of the white coats to the students.

The College of Pharmacy Open House followed where the new students and their families and friends were invited to mingle with faculty, students and staff.

The College of Pharmacy in conjunction with the College of Pharmacy Alumni Engagement Council hosted a State of the College event on September 21.  The event highlighted the achievements of the College over the past year while featuring research, teaching and practice innovations.  After the presentation, a lumni, students, faculty and staff had the opportunity to tour the new building and enjoy refreshments.  This event was just one way the College and the alumni are working together to bring together the students, faculty and alums for networking opportunities.

Great Plains IDeA-CTR announces scholar grant recipients

The Great Plains IDeA-Clinical Translational Research (CTR) Network at the University of Nebraska Medical Center has announced four awardees for its 2017 Scholars Program grants.  

Anthony Podany, Pharm.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice, is a recipient.   Dr. Podany's research addresses the critical need for shorter course tuberculosis (TB) treatment regimens for HIV/TB co-infected individuals.   Read more

The Simulation in Motion Nebraska trucks (SIM-NE) have set  out from UNMC to travel Nebraska's roads and help train personnel from rural emergency medical service agencies and rural critical access hospitals through high-tech simulation and real-life training experiences. That includes simulation training on drugs and medications.

Jacob Duncan, a third-year Pharm.D. candidate, rececntly won first place in the national Pharmacy Student Point-of-Care Disease Management Competition at the ninth-annual Next Generation Dx Summit in Washington, D.C.  Read more

Fei Yu, of China, a Ph.D. student in the pharmaceutical sciences graduate program, is one of two UNMC graduate students named a 2017-18 Presidential Graduate Fellow announced by University of Nebraska President Hank Bounds, Ph.D.  Read more

Operation Immunization: Giving shots, collecting data

The pharmacy students' "Operation Immunization" effort is a collaboration between the college, student health and the UNMC chapter of the American Pharmacists Association -- Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP).

"Operation Immunization" continues to significantly improve both student immunization rates and cost savings, while providing the pharmacy students with invaluable experience, organizers said.   Read more

Recent PSGP Graduates

As they arrived for the 2017-18 school year, Pharm.D. students at the UNMC College of Pharmacy received college-issued iPad Pros -- brand-new, tablet-style handheld computers.

Cool, right?  But, these devices are more than a mere perk.

"This is an important milestone in our continuing efforts to enhance teaching effectiveness," said Dean Courtney Fletcher, Pharm.D.  "It sets the stage for future innovations in active classroom learning, student-designed learning, simulation and patient care."   Read more

Sam Sanderson, Ph.D., an exuberant scientist who for 27 years worked at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, died Monday, August 8 at age 63.

Dr. Sanderson, a familiar figure across the Omaha campus, was known for making an impression on all who crossed his path. He was a research associate professor in the UNMC College of Pharmacy.

"You could always hear him coming down the hallway," said Jonathan Vennerstrom, Ph.D., professor in the College of Pharmacy. "His infectious laughter brightened the day for many of us.

"Sam exuded enthusiasm about his projects and about life," Dr. Vennerstrom said.
