The Unsung Hero Awards are presented to nine (9) deserving BC Hockey members who have been working the front lines in health care facilities and essential services.
Jennifer Cherney
- Elk Valley MHA (PeeWee team manager, secretary EVMHA exective)
Elkford Medical Clinic
- Jennifer spends hundreds of hours volunteering for several community endeavors while working full time and raising two (2) kids.
Kathy Doull
- Abbotsford MHA (Association President)
Fraser Health Authority -
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Kathy has worked around the clock with community groups to create a community assessment centre with the Abbotsford Division of Family Practice.
Shannon Hamm
- Surrey MHA (Team Treasurer)
IGA Grocery Store -
In addition to her regular work at the grocery store,
Shannon graciously has offered to be a personal shopper to several other hockey families, including assisting one of the other moms who has a heart transplant and has been unable to leave her home due to a compromised immune system.
Marcia Kent
- Oceanside MHA (U11 Tournament Organizer)
Nanaimo Regional Hospital -
Marcia, a mom to twin boys, has been a full time acute care nurse for almost 16 years. Over the years, she has been a bright light to those that are fortunate enough to be in her care or work alongside her. She has organized doctor versus nurses softball games raising over $10,000.
Michele MacKenzie
- Coquitlam MHA (U15 Coordinator)
Royal Columbian Hospital -
Michele and her husband Glen each coordinate a division for Coquitlam MHA and are on the front lines of the pandemic, Michele as a respiratory therapist and Glen as a fire fighter. Both have been working long shifts while balancing two (2) children at home.
Dwayne Mollin
- Kelowna MHA (Safety Officer)
Kelowna General Hospital -
Dwayne works countless hours and many night shifts as an intensive care nurse with pending, suspected and positive Covid-19 patients. He has three (3) daughters who all play for Kelowna MHA and they, along with his wife, understand how much Dwayne is needed on the front line.
Dan Plante
- Burns Lake MHA (U7 Coach)
Canada Post - Dan works as a letter carrier for Canada Post and suffered a severe leg injury in December. Despite the injury, Dan continued to coach and remained committed to the U7 athletes teaching essential development skills.
Erika Robinson
- South Okanagan MHA (Safety Manager)
Interior Health Authority
- Erika oversees five (5) hospital labs which are conducting Covid-19 tests. Erika doesn't stop there. She is a Search & Rescue Manager, has her paramedic designation and is the safety manager for her daughter's hockey team.
Kellie Steel
- Alberni Valley MHA
No Frills Grocery Store -
Kellie has dedicated her life to supporting her family's hockey dreams. The Steel family has worked hard to see the local No Frills store in Port Alberni is running to provide the local community with an essential service.
There are so many people working essential services and the nominations received were all worthy and inspirational. Thank you to all who give your time and efforts to helping others.
