This newsletter is designed to assist high school seniors in the preparation for the transition to college as a part of the University of North Texas Senior Year Experience. When asking for letters of recommendation for admission applications, a program, internship or job here are some guidelines to secure quality recommendations.

• Choose Recommenders Carefully and Strategically
• Choose people who will give you positive recommendations
• Request a Letter Formally
• Ask in person when possible and/or send an email asking for a recommendation
• Provide all Relevant Information
• Include information about the school/program/scholarship you are applying and provide your resume. Let your recommenders know what format you need (letter, form, survey, etc.) and how it should be sent
• Be Polite and Respectful of Recommenders Time
• Ask 2 months before the deadline, if possible, to ensure they have enough time
• Follow Up
• Send a reminder, a thank you note, and an update on your application

While UNT doesn't require an essay as a part of your initial admissions application, you may need to write essays, personal statements, or even answer questions for scholarship opportunities.
