Putting God's love into action...
Come join us and have a Brush with Kindness as UPC continues the partnership with Habitat For Humanity on Saturday, August 18th.   We will depart the church at 7:00 a.m.
We need to be in Cheyenne on East 13th St by 8:00 a.m. and our shift ends with lunch provided by Habitat at 12:00 pm.   We have spaces for 10 workers to join this effort. We will be continuing work at the same housing units we were at in May only this time we will be dry walling and/or painting.
I plan to drive and can take 5 people complete with coffee & donut deliciousness!   Please RSVP to Sheri at UPCLaramiePastor@gmail.com with your interest.
"Habitat for Humanity is a perpetual miracle; everyone who receives, gives; and everyone who gives receives. If you want to live complacent and uninspired, stay away from Habitat; come close to Habitat and it will change you, and make you part of something that changes the world."-- Randall Wallace
Helping other is always a great way to give back to your community. Try thinking of others who can use a little help to make a lot of change. Habitat for Humanity has been making that change every year.  Since its inception, Habitat for Humanity has helped to build more than 800,000 houses around the world providing safe, affordable shelter to so many people. The houses are built with donated materials by volunteers then are sold to qualified families with no profit. Each home is financed with affordable, no interest loans that can extend out over 30 years.
Habitat for Humanity is not a government agency and they accept no government funds for the construction of their houses. Their mission is to eradicate "Poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action." In order to get a Habitat home, the future homeowner must agree to pay a down payment and make monthly mortgage payments. In addition, they must invest hundred of hours of their own time into building their Habitat house and the houses of others. Families in the program are chosen based on "their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the no-interest loan." There is no discrimination based on religion or race.   I hope you can join us!

The Backpack  Program
The BackPack Program provides backpacks filled with non-perishable, child-friendly and nutritious food to children who are food insecure.  The idea for this program originated from a school nurse in Arizona who determined students were coming to her with symptoms of hunger, dizziness and stomach aches.  These are now over 3,600 backpack programs throughout the country.  Here in Laramie, students in need are provided with enough food to see them through the weekend.  "Kids who are Hungry" is the only criteria and are referred to the program by teachers, principals, or counselors.  In the past, about 110 bags a week were distributed by the program.  This month's Care Cart is seeking both backpacks and foodstuffs: all=juice sippy boxes, such as apple juice; canned ravioli; cereal that isn't heavily sugared; instant oatmeal; macaroni and cheese; cookies; chunky soups; granola bars; peanut butter; microwavable or canned spaghetti with meatballs; raisins; jelly; crackers; packets of instant mashed potatoes; canned chicken; canned fruit; canned vegetables; pudding cups; canned beef or chicken stews; banana chips; applesauce cups; canned mild chili with beans; Beanie Weenies; canned macaroni and beef; healthy trail mix, microwavable popcorn, and healthy breakfast bars.

LOGOS Scholarships
UPC is excited to start another year of LOGOS.
As we prepare for the year we need your help.  Due to the cost of the weekly program we do charge a fee to attend LOGOS. However we never want this to be the reason a family does not participate in the program. Thanks to your generous donations last year we were able to offer 4 full and 4 partial scholarships.
Once again this year we will having an envelope drive.  Look for the numbered envelopes on the LOGOS bulletin board in the coffee area.  Please select a numbered envelope.  In the envelope place the matching dollar amount.  Place the envelope in the offering tray or turn it in to the office.
Thank you so much for your continued support of the LOGOS program at UPC!
Help Needed!!!!!
The UWYO International Student Giveaway will be held on Saturday, August 25, in the park area across from UPC's northern parking lot.  It's a fun occasion for all dealing with newly arrived students from all corners of the world. It's a great way to have them meet their community.  Volunteers are needed with trucks or trailers to transport our collected donations from Marcia's Closet to the Giveaway as well as volunteers to help set-up and then assist the students with their "shopping."  Trucks and/or trailers are also needed to take the items to the students' homes.  We'll start loading the trucks at 6:30 a.m.  Everything is usually finished by 11:00 a.m.  Any amount of time that can be given is welcome.  For more information or to volunteer, call 307-460-3293 or use sadielady2@charter.net .

Inquirers Class for Membership into UPC
Sunday, August 26 11:00 a.m.  Whether you are new to the Presbyterian Church, or you are considering a transfer of membership, those interested in becoming members of United Presbyterian Church are invited to attend an "Inquirer's Class." This class provides an opportunity to explore becoming a member of UPC. In the class, you will get to know our transitional pastor Rev. Sheri Fry who will teach the class and you will meet others who are interested in membership at this church.   The class begins with some time to get to know one another, think about our own faith journeys, and consider what led us to UPC. Throughout the class, we learn more about the UPC community, our ministry and the larger context of the Presbyterian Church. This class concludes with a Q & A period, during which we can provide further details for those who decide to join. The Inquirer's class is from 11:00-1:30 with a light lunch served. This class will be held on Sunday, August 26.   Please contact Sheri at upcLaramiePastor@gmail.com or 307-742-2061 x 12 if you are interested in attending this class.
Recently my colleague, Derick, shared with me that he and his wife, together with his parents, have assumed responsibility for his 7 nieces and nephews while both of his brothers are in jail. (Derick and his wife also have 3 children of their own!) Their family is caring for the 7 children out of a belief they will be happier and healthier in their homes than if they were to be placed in foster care. But, as you might imagine, suddenly having to feed, house and clothe 10 children has placed an enormous strain on the families' resources, so I've volunteered to help coordinate some support for them.
With the new school year fast approaching, I am looking for some UPC Angels to donate a backpack and school supplies for each of the 6 school-aged children in care. There are 2 children in middle school and 4 children in elementary school. If you and your family would like to help, please contact me at 339-222-8255 or call the church office. I'd like to have the backpacks ready to deliver by Friday, August 17th. Thank you! Marilyn Votaw
