Summer Sermon Series

Matt Gaventa preaching
"The One You Love"

Sermon text:
Come Sing in Summer Choir!
Summer Choir Singers are any singers who wish to sing in the choir on any Summer Sunday morning they choose. If you'd like to sing this summer, come to the Chancel promptly at 10:00 a.m. and rehearse the morning’s anthem. Summer singers wear no robes, sing the anthem, then join family and/or friends in the congregation for the remainder of the service. All singers are welcome!

This Sunday: " Hallelujah, Amen," by G.F. Handel. The text is by the Reverend Thomas Morell, from “Judas Maccabæus”

Young Adult Gathering
Thursday, July 12
6:00 p.m.
You are invited to an event for Presbyterian Young Adults that are in Austin. We have teamed up with Westminster Pres, Central Pres, and First Pres, along with other Presbyterian churches in the area so that we can get together as many young adults to fellowship with one another. Come with your ideas of what you need from a group of like-minded peers! We hope to make this a semi-regular/regular meet-up, so come on Thursday, July 12, at 6:00 p.m. at Easy Tiger, and let’s see what this could be! Let me know if you have questions: ukirk @upcaustin.org

Making a
First Impression
You all know the old adage that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Along with our smiling, welcoming faces, our building and grounds are a huge part of that first impression. Keeping our space here on San Antonio Street as part of our ministry of hospitality is a huge undertaking. But, I was once told as a child that many hands make a light load.

That’s why we have two opportunities for you to participate in this ministry:

  • Courtyard Gardening Team
  • Clean and Shiny Team

The central courtyard is bare and needs some attention, and the north courtyard, where our service program guests to Street Youth Ministry. Tuesday UPLift, and Micah 6 food pantry all come every week is looking bedraggled.
Summer is a great time for clearing out and making the ground ready for the cooler fall weather. We’d like to organize one or two short early morning work days before Rally Day.

The Clean and Shiny team meets two or three time per year to spruce up the sanctuary. We polish all of the wood in the chancel and take care of any scuffs on the pews.

If you are interested in helping with these important projects please email Frank Adkins at frank@upcaustin.org, or sign up on the volunteer form outside the church office. We will schedule one or two Courtyard Gardening and Clean and Shiny dates before Rally Day, August 26.Thanks!

Summer Fellowship
Sundays @ 9:30 a.m.
The Faith & Life and Parenting & Faith classes invite you to gather informally in Fellowship Hall for coffee and conversation any Sunday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Regular Sunday morning classes will resume September 2, 2018.
The Present Word
Room 3, Lower Level
Sundays @ 9:30 a.m.

The Present Word Class will continue to meet every Sunday through June and July. Our background material is provided by the curriculum that gives the class its name. By using the provided scripture readings, we ensure that we are engaging with the whole Bible over time. Our summer quarter topic is "Justice in the New Testament." However, this is not a Bible study class. The scriptures and weekly lessons are our starting point for lively discussions that include the week's events, current issues and our own Christian journeys. This topic seems especially relevant in this heated political climate. The class is led by Roscoe Overton. We would love to have you come learn, share and pray with us.
Class schedule for July:

July 8
“Punishing the Poor.”
July 15
Please join Faith & Life to hear Paul Hooker’s report on the General Assembly, Room 201, Upper Level
July 22
“Inequality in the United States.”
July 29
the Christian understanding of women’s sexuality

For more information about the class, email Jon Eddison .
For this week's grocery cart
  • Large jar peanut butter (not organic)
  • Large jar preserves or jelly
  • 10 lb box oatmeal (not instant)
  • Large box raisins
  • Breakfast bars
Thank you for your incredible support of this UPC mission!!
2019 USA Mission Experience to Finger Lakes Region, New York
Standing on the shoulders of empowered women

A group of Presbyterian women will travel to the Finger Lakes Region of New York, July 12–22, 2019, for PW’s fifth USA Mission Experience . They will explore the rich history that Presbyterian women have in the women’s and civil rights movements. These women will also have the opportunity to learn more about themselves and about the people of the Finger Lakes Region, including migrant workers and Native Americans. Highlights of the journey will include a day in Seneca Falls at the Women’s Convention at the National Women’s Hall of Fame; a visit to the Susan B. Anthony home; and a visit to the Harriet Tubman House.

The USA Mission Experience equips women with an understanding of the region’s history and culture, the existing ministry of the church there and the challenges faced by women and children living in the area. Participants serve as ambassadors for the region during two years of itineration following the experience.

Apply now to join the 2019 USA Mission Experience to the Finger Lakes Region . Applications and reference forms must be submitted to PW in the Synod moderators by August 15, 2018.
