There's Room for You in Summer Choir!

Summer Choir Singers are any singers who wish to sing in the choir on any chosen Summer Sunday morning. They are welcome to come to the Chancel promptly at 10:00 a.m. and rehearse that morning’s anthem. Summer singers wear no robes, sing the Anthem, then join family and/or friends in the congregation for the remainder of the service.  All singers are welcome!

This Sunday, the choir sings that great American folk hymn "At the River" adapted by Aaron Copland. Please come gather with us at the Chancel Sunday morning!

Social Witness Committee Report on Immigration

For the past year, the Social Witness Committee of University Presbyterian Church has been studying the topic of immigration. This is an issue that has been on the front pages of newspapers and on the minds of millions of people in our country. Our committee presented our Final Report and Recommendations on Immigration to the Session on July 19.

Church-Wide Appreciation Banquet
August 6, 12:00 p.m., Great Hall
Hosted by the UPC Youth Ministry

All are invited to join us in the Great Hall next Sunday, August 6, immediately following worship for a free lunch and an opportunity for the Youth Group to share their thanks with their home church for all the support they've received this past year. We will also be recognizing all those who participated in the leadership of Christian Formation classes and groups in the past year. No RSVP necessary. Following lunch and a brief program, including the end of year video, we will dismiss around 1:15 p.m. Thanks and we hope to see you there!

Can't make it to the banquet on Sunday? You can still catch UP on the UPC Youth Urban Gaps experience this summer.

Supper & Substance Monday, August 7

2017 marks the tenth year for our summer dinner and movie discussion at UPC! This year, the Christian Formation Committee offers four movies--all illuminating themes of life and faith, and serving as visual parables that help viewers see how God’s messages of hope and love are revealed through contemporary films. Dinner is prepared by different groups at UPC, and donations go to that group’s chosen special service project. Dinner begins at 6:00 p.m., with discussion following at 6:30 p.m. A separate movie event is offered each Monday for children. Cost for the dinner is $7.00 for adults, and $3.00 for children ages 3-12.

You must sign up and pay for dinner in advance! This is important, as those preparing the meal must know how many to prepare for! Look for the sign-up table in the courtyard after church on Sundays. And of course you are welcome to come for the discussion if you do not wish to join us for dinner!

If you want to participate in Supper & Substance and will not be in church Sunday, August 6, please email the church office at upc@upcaustion.org by this Friday. You may pay at the door August 7.

UP next, on August 7, is Moana, nominated for two oscars in 2016. Supper provided by the Christian Formation Committee. John Leedy is the discussion leader.

Moana Waialiki is a sea voyaging enthusiast and the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. When her island's fishermen can't catch any fish and the crops fail, she learns that the demigod Maui caused the blight by stealing the heart of the goddess, Te Fiti. The only way to heal the island is to persuade Maui to return Te Fiti's heart, so Moana sets off on an epic journey across the Pacific. The latest Disney "princess film, Moana is based on stories from Polynesian mythology.

What's Before Rally Day? CRUD Week!
Rally Day, the UPC fall kickoff, is Sunday, August 20. You can help get ready by participating in CRUD Week, August 7-10. CRUD— Clean, Reorganize, Update, Dedicate—is a week of service projects at UPC for the whole family. Shifts are 2.5 hours, and there are plenty of jobs for kids and teens! On Thursday, we’ll dedicate our labor with a prayer walk and celebration at 3:00 p.m.

Stop by the CRUD table in the courtyard on Sunday after worship. Thanks!

New Underwear Collection
for Street Youth Ministry
For the next few Sundays, the Service Committee will be collecting packs of new underwear (men's and women's in any sizes) to donate to the young men and women of the Street Youth Ministry. These young people are outside in the heat all day and do not have access to places to do laundry, so having a supply of clean undergarments is essential in these hot summer months. If you are able to bring in some new underwear in a plastic bag to donate, it will be collected during the offering in the shopping cart that gets pushed down the center aisle. Thank you!
UPLift Needs Next Week
Every Tuesday morning, UPC volunteers provide some food and coffee, hygiene items, and occasional financial assistance for our clients. While all donations are welcome at any time, here are some items to consider bringing to worship this week.

Thank you for your incredible support of this UPC mission!!
For this week's grocery cart

Staples for our "brunch":

  • 10 lb box of oatmeal
  • (oatmeal for 2 weeks)
  • brown sugar
  • bag of white sugar
  • large jars of jelly or preserves
  • breakfast/snack bars
Hygiene Supply Summer Drive

The UPC Youth Ministry collects travel sized hygiene supplies year round, but the summers are a great time to help us stock back up. When you're traveling this summer either for vacation or for work, please remember to collect the travel sized hygiene supplies—from hotels, airplanes, wherever—and drop them off in the basket outside John Leedy’s office. These supplies go a long way to help those in need. Our VBS kids made up more than 60 hygiene kits last week—thank you, Heroes!—so our supply levels are a bit down. Please be sure that bottles are unopened / unused and that toothbrushes are individually wrapped. Thanks for your help!
