DAVID SHEVLINO
Oil
Alla Prima Figure Painting
October 10-14, 2016 (limited to 15)
Tuition $650 + $50 Model Fee

Alla prima figure painting:
This class is about painting the figure alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects.  On the first day there will be a drawing demonstration, then the class will practice drawing the figure.  For the rest of the workshop we'll paint from the model. After a painting demo we'll learn how to interpret and simplify by seeing the figure as a series of basic shapes described by color/ light and shadow.  By learning to simplify what we see, we become better able to paint our subjects with greater clarity and directness.  This class will be particularly helpful to students who wish to paint more loosely and to use their brushstrokes with economy.

"My exposure to art began as a teenager growing up in NJ near NYC.  I began making trips to art museums in NYC when I was 15 and developed a love of traditional figurative painting. As a youth I found myself especially drawn to the old masters. It wasn't until much later that I became interested in modern art.  Those early trips to the museum instilled in me a love of craft and a sense of where painting comes from. "

"Art is like a language to me;  it gives me a means of expressing the way I perceive the world around me.  What I love about painting is that it has no boundaries, except for the limits of one's imagination.  I can do anything I want with it.
David Shevlino was born in Jersey City, NJ in 1962.  He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania.  He has exhibited his work nationally.  He has had several solo exhibitions of his work in NY galleries and in cities throughout the U.S. His work has been featured in American Artist Magazine, American Art Collector, The New Yorker, New American Paintings and The Artists' Magazine.

Born in Guangzhou, China, Huihan completed his formal art training at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art with a BFA in 1975 and taught there from 1979-1987.  He graduated from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, with an MFA in 1993.
Huihan's art was influenced by the 19th century academic French and Russian schools which were brought to the art schools in China in the 50's. He highly regards the group of Naturalists who worked in the academic tradition, but portrayed scenes from ordinary life in the late 19th century.  Inspired to travel to different regions of the world, he began painting as a cultural bridge to connect people.  His goal was to share the joyful moments and compassion he experienced in these cultures.

His paintings can be considered impressionistic realism; a combination of primary field study and reference, focused on compositional arrangement, color design, accurate detail, spontaneous brushstrokes and texture.  In his paintings, he pays close attention to the characteristics of people.  Gesture and atmosphere suggest a deeper meaning.
Huihan has been included in major national shows and invitational exhibitions.  He paintings have won numerous awards such as "Best of Show" in the Western Rendezvous of Art; "Gold Medal for Best Paiting in the California Art Club's 92 nd Annual Juried Exhibition, among numerous others.
Huihan has been published in many national art publications and periodicals, too numerous to mention.  His work has been shown in numerous museums and his work is highly sought after by collectors.
He is a Master Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, Master Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America and is also a Signature Member of the California Art Club.
His work is represented by The Sylvan Gallery-Charleston, S.C.; Total Arts Gallery-Taos, N.M.; Trailside Galleries-Scottsdale, Az; among others.  His work can also be seen on his website at www.huihanweizhenart.com .

  CHERI CHRISTENSEN

Level I
Oil Painting In The Russian Impressionist Tradition-Indoor
October 21-24, 2016
Tuition $ 650

This workshop will focus on creating a painting with the relative use of color, value, temperature and intensity. We will learn how to interpret this while painting from life and from photos.

First, we will go over the basics of this approach while working on still life.  Later we will work from photographs or life using the previous knowledge and adding an emphasis on composition, and how one decides what might make a good painting. We will discuss choice of subject, light, composition, and edges to create the kind of painting one has in mind.

Students may choose any subject matter they wish- landscape, still life, figurative or animals.

The instructor will do painting demonstrations using both brush and palette knife techniques. A short segment will include a brief introduction of using digital cameras, camcorders, computers and how they can aid you in capturing and composing your subject.

We will include a short field trip to gather reference material to use later in the class.   Students are encouraged to bring cameras, camcorders, digital or otherwise to help gather their own reference material.

You may also bring your own photos or digital prints to class.

Experience is not mandatory, but a good attitude, willingness to learn and a sense of humor are.

"I  am inspired by the simple, everyday interaction of the animals in their environment; the way that light dances across the form, the harmony of color relationships, and the shapes of light and shadow.

I prefer early morning light or late afternoon settings, with extreme back-lighting. My focus is on the farm animals and the use of color, light and the texture of the oil paint to convey a mood."

Cheri was born in a rural farm and ranch town and is quite comfortable in that environment.   She attended the University of North Carolina and the University of Washington. She studied oil painting for three years with Ron Lukas, a protégé of Sergie Bongart, who taught in the tradition of the Russian Impressionists. In her studies, Cheri concentrated on seeing an conveying the effects of color and light on forms.

She has won numerous regional, national and international awards in various shows.  She is represented by several galleries including Howard Mandville Gallery-Kirkland, WA. www.howardmandville.com; McLarry Fine Arts-Santa Fe, NM,   http://www.mclarryfineart.com ; Insight Gallery-Fredericksburg, TX, www.insightgallery.com ; among others.  Cheri's web site is: http://www.cherichristensen.com/

CAROLYN ANDERSON

Oil & pastel
Figure / Portrait
October 25 - 28, 2016
Tuition $725+ $50 model fee

Explore the qualities of composition, value, and color, with an emphasis on the use of contrast, rhythm, and edges. Learn to interpret the subject matter and to enjoy the challenge and spontaneity of alla prima painting. Subjects will include live models. There will be daily demonstrations, a slide presentation, and as much individual instruction as possible.

Using what she descries as a blend of expressionism and impressionism, Anderson paints the human face, landscapes, and horses with equal skill. "What draws me to a certain person is character more than anything," she says. "For a while it was children, but they can be difficult to paint without getting too cute. I try to convey a touch of humanity. I still paint horses, too, because they have such a great form. I like doing winter landscapes because of the abstract quality and Indian dancers because of the color and movement. I bring something different to my portrait work after doing landscapes. Art is all about relationships and perspective."

Born and raised in the Chicago area, Carolyn Anderson attended school at Illinois State University.  She joined the VISTA program (Volunteers in Service to America) in the early 70's and was assigned to work on an Indian reservation in north central Montana and now lives in Havre, a small community near the Canadian border.

Anderson's paintings are full of color and expression.  The focus in her work is often loosely rendered in an almost sketch-like improvisation.  The emphasis is to catch the essence of each subject.  Her subjects vary from dancers to horses to landscapes, but she is primarily known for her portraits.

Anderson has participated in the C. M. Russell Art Auction, one of the Northwest's largest shows, since 1980.  In 1999 and 2000, she was awarded Jurors' Best of Show Awards, along with the 1999 Artist's Choice Award.  As a member of the Western Rendezvous of Art, she also received a Merit Award in 1999.  Her work has been featured in national publications, including American Art and Architecture, Art of the West and Southwest Art magazines.
