Friday 1/22, 1:00-2:00 PM: Every Eye is Upon Me: First Ladies of the United States. Docent-led Zoom tour of The National Portrait Gallery. This is the first major exhibition to explore the historical significance of this prominent position through the mode of portraiture. The exhibition will span nearly 250 years, from Martha Washington to Melania Trump, and will feature more than 60 portraits of the First Ladies, alongside related ephemera including iconic dresses.

Friday 1/29, 1:00-2:15 PM: Monet & More. France was the center of the art world in the 18th and 19th centuries and The National Gallery of Art has some of its finest works. Estelle Quain, a National Gallery docent and Friendship Heights Neighbors Network member, will lead us on a Zoom tour of some of the best from that collection.

Friday 2/5, 1:00-2:00 PM: Arts of Afghanistan with docent Vandana Pamecha.
The ancient Near East, a region extending from the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea to present-day Afghanistan, was home to several of the world’s oldest civilizations.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art (Freer / Sackler Galleries) has more than 1,100 objects which span from 5000 BCE to the advent of Islam in 651. Arts of Afghanistan highlights include ancient Iranian ceramics, one of the finest holdings of Achaemenid and Sasanian silver vessels, and folios of calligraphy and miniature paintings from famous Poets and Philosophers.

Friday 2/12, 1:00-2:00 PM: The National Portrait Gallery: America's Presidents. The National Portrait Gallery's America's Presidents exhibition is part of its permanent collection and is the nation's only complete collection of presidential portraiture outside the White House. You will learn how portraiture changes over time from classical to contemporary style paintings, demonstrating the depth and breadth of the Portrait Gallery's collection. Discussions of what artists are included in presidential portraits, how each president is represented, and the differences in style and size of portraits make for an interesting and compelling conversation.

Tuesday 2/16 2:00 - 3:15 PM: Florentine and Venetian Renaissance Art. The Renaissance was a time of great socio-economic, political, and cultural change which radically influenced the development of Western art. The rise of classicism, humanism and scientific inquiry brought new approaches to artistic imagery that we will see in the works of Italian masters such as Leonardo, Raphael, Titian, and their predecessors. This special tour will be given by Estelle Quain, a docent at the National Gallery of Art and FHNN member. Friday 2/19, 1:00-2:00 PM: Hokusai- Mad About Painting, Part II. We had one docent tour in July for the First Installation. With this tour, docent Christine Freidel will show us some of Katsushika Hokusai's additional work from the museum's 2nd installation.
The Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is widely recognized for a single image—Great Wave Off the Coast of Kanagawa, an icon of global art—yet he produced thousands of works throughout his long life. Come view the exhibition Hokusai: Mad About Painting, which features works from the world’s largest collection of paintings, sketches, and drawings by Hokusai. Works large and small are on view, from six-panel folding screens and hanging scrolls to paintings and drawings. Together, these works reveal an artistic genius who thought he might finally achieve true mastery in painting—if he lived to the age of 110. This docent-led Zoom tour is through the National Museum of Asian Art (Freer / Sackler Galleries). The docent will have access to high resolution slides and a digital resource base. We can provide comments and questions to the docent prior to the tour, so that it is focused on the interests of our group. Group size is limited to 30 people!

Friday 3/5, 1:00 – 2:00 pm: My Iran: Six Women Photographers From the dynamism of the street to the quiet corners of distant memories, the works featured in My Iran: Six Women Photographers explore the complexities of life within and outside their home country. Natural and staged, these images explore themes of memory, loss, and exile, but also of defiance and hope. From photographs capturing the spirit and force of a social and political movement that dramatically altered the role of women in society to work in post-Revolution environment, staging and manipulating photographs reveal deeply moving individual stories, as well as unique observations about contemporary life as an Iranian. This tour with docent Vandana Pamecha is through the National Museum of Asian Art (Freer / Sackler Galleries).

Friday 3/12 1:00-2:15 pm: Art Across Cultures. This exciting docent-led tour of the Freer will allow us to view South East Asian culture through eyes of art. We will explore their culture starting from Neolithic time, traverse the influences of Silk Road, and will see adaption and exchange of art styles in different dynasties and countries. The tour will include the beautiful Peacock Room, a masterpiece of interior decorative art. We will have access to high-resolution slides and be able to Zoom in on the details.

Friday 3/19, 1:00-2:00 pm. Forces of Nature: Renwick Invitational 2020. Invited artists approach the long history of art’s engagement with the natural world through unconventional and highly personal perspectives. The Renwick Invitational 2020 features artists Lauren Fensterstock, Timothy Horn, Debora Moore, and Rowland Ricketts. Nature provides a way for these invited artists to ask what it means to be human in a world increasingly chaotic and divorced from our physical landscape. Representing craft media from fiber to mosaic to glass and metals, these artists approach the long history of art’s engagement with the natural world through unconventional and highly personal perspectives. The Forces of Nature: Renwick Invitational 2020 is the ninth installment of the Renwick Invitational. Established in 2000, this biennial showcase highlights midcareer and emerging makers who are deserving of wider national recognition. This docent-led Zoom tour is through the Smithsonian American Art Museum / Renwick.

Friday 4/9 1:00-2:00 PM. ¡Printing the Revolution! The Rise and Impact of Chicano Graphics, 1965 to Now. Join our docent as we explore the rise of Chicano graphics within the early social movements and the ways in which Chicanx artists since then have advanced innovative printmaking practices attuned to social justice. This exhibition will be the first to unite historic civil rights era prints alongside works by contemporary printmakers including several who embrace expanded graphics that exist beyond the paper substrate. Presented through the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Friday 4/30 1:00-2:15 PM. American Stories – A Virtual Tour of the American Collection at the National Gallery of Art. American art is closely tied to this country’s development as a nation. This tour traces the changes in American art from colonial days to the early twentieth century and shows how artists responded to critical events in American history. Estelle Quain, a National Gallery of Art docent, and Friendship Heights Neighbors Network member, will lead us on this Zoom tour.

Friday 5/14 1:00-2:00 PM. Meeting Tessai. Tomioka Tessai is a prime example of a modern Japanese painter. Contemporaries praised his works as being exceptionally modern, and they recognized parallels between Tessai’s work and European postimpressionism. Paintings by Tomioka Tessai (1836–1924) were so esteemed that he was one of the first Japanese artists to have his works shown in the United States—in an exhibition organized by the Smithsonian—following World War II. Decades before that, museum founder Charles Lang Freer met with Tessai three times in June 1907 while the American collector was in Kyoto.
