CAIR-Connecticut Calls for Probe of Possible Bias Motive for New Haven Mosque Arson
(Hartford, C.T., 5/13/19)
– The Connecticut Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CT), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim Civil Rights and Advocacy Organization, today called on law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for a fire set at a New Haven mosque.
Officials said they believe the fire Sunday at the Diyanet Mosque, which is still under construction, was intentionally set. The fire started on the first floor of the building and spread to the second level.

“Given recent attacks on houses of worship in this country and around the world, it is incumbent on law enforcement authorities to investigate the possibility of a bias motive for this arson,” said
CAIR-CT Executive Director Tark Aouadi.
He noted that an arsonist recently targeted a mosque in Escondido, Calif., and left a note referencing the terrorist attacks on mosques in New Zealand.
CAIR- Connecticut is holding a press conference outside the masjid today at 6:30 pm.
UPDATE - In addition to what is being offered by the City of New Haven, CAIR-CT is offering $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the persons responsible.

The Washington-based civil rights organization is urging mosques and other Islamic institutions to take measures outlined in its "Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety" booklet.
Advice offered in CAIR’s security publication is applicable to all institutions, regardless of organizational mission.
Earlier this year, CAIR offered a community safety webinar with two Department of Homeland Security (DHS) security experts. Webinar participants included staff and administrators from some 100 Islamic centers, mosques, Islamic schools, and other Muslim community institutions nationwide.
