INNOVATION IN PEDIATRIC CARE

A Parent’s Game-changing Solution

By Misti Staley

CEO Staley House LLC

Safety is protocol in the NICU, but there is one big challenge—tube feeding. It’s a lifeline for so many medically complex babies and kids. As a mom who faced these challenges firsthand, I turned my personal struggle into a game-changing solution: the FreeArm.

My journey with tube feeding started with my son, Freeman, who was born in 2015. From day one in the NICU, tube feeding was part of our world. But I quickly noticed the tools available weren’t great. Nurses and parents had to get creative, taping syringes to cribs or rigging makeshift holders from ribbon and rubber bands. It was frustrating and inconsistent, making an already tough situation even harder.

Instead of just accepting it, I got to work. I designed the FreeArm—a flexible, adjustable arm that holds gravity syringe feeds and pump feeds. It easily attaches to hospital beds, wheelchairs, strollers, and more, creating a stable, hands-free feeding solution.

For nurses, it means improved patient safety and workflow. For caregivers and Tubies, it standardizes tube feeding between hospital and home, making it easier to maintain nutritional compliance and regain quality of life.

The FreeArm takes the guesswork out of syringe height, by bending the arm lower for slower feeds and higher for faster feeds. The height of the syringe above the patient's abdomen can now be charted, determining the height at which the patient tolerates feeds best. The FreeArm can hold the syringe at that height in the incubator, on a chair while the patient is being held, in an open crib, on an adult hospital bed and then discharged home with the family to hold feeds in the car, in the home and on-the-go.

Research shows with FreeArm use that the outlook towards having a feeding tube shot up by 92%. The FreeArm also reduced vomiting by 14%, reduced spilled feeds and meds by 51% and increased the ability to perform therapies while tube feeding by 53%.

What’s Next? More Innovation! The FreeArm with Peg was recently launched to hold syringes for feeding and venting inside the GE Giraffe OmniBed and the Draeger Baby Leo. The Peg end can then be exchanged with the clamp end to hold syringes on the chair for kangaroo care and then moved to the open crib. The FreeArm provides continuum of care throughout the tube feeding patient's hospital stay and beyond.

Sadly, Freeman lost his battle to pulmonary hypertension in 2016 at 10 months old. He is greatly missed every day. The FreeArm now continues Freeman's legacy of love by making tube feeding easier and safer for families and clinicians around the world. For more information, visit FreeArmCare.com.

Freeman Playground was built through Freeman Foundation, a 501C3 started shortly after losing Freeman. At the time of opening in 2017, Freeman Playground was the only Arkansas playground with ramps on the equipment and a poured in place rubber surface within 90 miles of Helena-West Helena. Freeman Playground provides a fun place to play for families of all abilities.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Steve Windsor

Steve, our Purchasing Manager, has been a member of the Neotech team since 2016.

Previously a Procurement Specialist, Steve’s role at Neotech has evolved into one that requires coordination across various departments.

He is responsible for planning, purchasing, and managing the supply chain for Neotech’s inventory, which includes both parts and materials used in manufacturing, as well as finished devices produced by contractor manufacturers.

His role also extends into other areas, such as new product development, where he coordinates tooling, prototype part purchases, and the sourcing of new materials. Additionally, Steve collaborates with Engineering and Quality teams, working with vendors to resolve issues, discuss corrective actions, and ensure that engineering drawings and documentation are updated as needed.

What Steve enjoys most about his role is the constant challenge it brings. He thrives on solving complex inventory management problems, working with suppliers to achieve company goals, and finding creative ways to improve efficiency.

“But most of all, I really enjoy working with the people at Neotech and knowing that we all share a common purpose of helping patients all over the world,” he shared.

Before joining Neotech, Steve worked as a Production Manager for Weston Graphics, one of Neotech’s top suppliers, where he gained experience in packaging materials and manufacturing. He attended Pierce College and Moorpark College, where he majored in business.

Steve and his two sisters were born in Santa Monica, CA, but his parents are from Hungary. He is a dual citizen and is fluent in Hungarian. At home, Steve has two pets: Zoey, a 13-year-old blue nose pit bull, and Angelo, a 45-year-old Amazon parrot. (You may have seen them in last month’s NeoPets feature.)

Outside of work, Steve loves bike riding, tennis, camping, visiting local breweries, and trying new restaurants with his dad. He’s an adrenaline enthusiast who once reached a speed of 62 mph on his bike! And a fun fact about Steve: despite being color blind, he says that blue is his favorite color.
