Hope Fades for Abandoned Lab

ARMSTRONG COUNTY, PA -- Hope is fading for rescuing the dog abandoned in Plum Creek Township Nov. 17.

The dog has been identified as Cooper, a 3-year-old Chocolate Lab.

Hopes were running high early last week as Cooper was seen nightly on trail cams as he kept vigil on the road near where he had been left.

A trap was set a few feet down the hill from that spot and the humane police officer and Orphans of the Storm volunteers tried to entice Cooper with hamburger, hotdogs, bacon, cat food, chew bones, lunch meat, peanut butter on bread and more. Those living near the area checked the trap regularly and were also on the lookout for him.

But the last sighting of Cooper was ten days ago, Nov. 28 at 11:41 PM as he gazed into the trap, only three feet from rescue and beginning a new life.

Sadly, no confirmed sightings have occurred since then.

Trail cams and the trap were removed today.

"I am sorry I let Cooper and our community down by not being able to save him," said Chris Jirak O'Donnell, the humane police officer (HPO) covering the case.

"We still hope he might reappear at some point so we can resume our efforts," she continued.

Cooper is very afraid of people and runs from anyone who stops. It is important that if you see the Lab to call HPO O'Donnell and not try to catch him. If pursued, he will likely leave the area, making rescue almost impossible.

Anyone with information on the person who abandoned Cooper is encouraged to report what they know so that charges might be filed.

The number to call for this case only is 724-954-9515.

This case has shown the need for a larger trap for the Armstrong County Humane Program. To donate for this trap or learn more about the humane program or laws protecting animals in Pennsylvania, visit www.humaneanimalallies.org.
