HB 1104 Improve IVC Process and Enhance Public Safety: My bill, HB 1104, has passed in the House and has been sent to the Senate! This bill is an important step toward strengthening North Carolina’s mental health system and protecting communities across the state. HB 1104 was introduced to address serious gaps in the current involuntary commitment (IVC) process that often leave individuals in crisis without timely care and place additional burdens on law enforcement, hospitals, and families. This bill will improve coordination between agencies and modernizing the mental health system for those involved in the criminal justice system, and aims to ensure that individuals experiencing severe mental health emergencies receive the help they need as quickly and effectively as possible.

House Bill 1104 is also about protecting public safety while treating

mental health challenges with seriousness and compassion. When

individuals in crisis do not receive timely treatment, the consequences

can impact entire communities. This legislation works to reduce

repeated emergency room visits, reduce strain on local law

enforcement, and provide more stable pathways to treatment and

recovery. This bill represents a meaningful effort to build a safer, more

effective, and more compassionate system for everyone involved.

One of the greatest strengths of House Bill 1104 is its focus on creating a more efficient and responsive process for mental health treatment. Meetings With Folks

This week during session I was able to meet with various groups. I met with NC Realtors, PA students for their legislation day, and some wonderful Pediatric Dentists. It is always good to meet with groups to discuss their work, legislation, and advocacy.

NC Support our Troops

Last week I was able to tour NC Support our Troops. This is an incredible organization that supports our troops around the world! Thank you for having me out for a tour.

NC Academy of Family Physicians

Last week I was able to meet with NCAFP on the House floor. They came down during their legislation day. During our time we were able to discuss the work I have been doing in the House, advocacy, and the work they do as family physicians. It is always nice to see groups on their advocacy day! Especially fulfilling was to reconnect with one of my former students from Brody School of Medicine. Thank, NCAFP, for coming down!
