Statement on Medicaid Reimbursement Cuts
I am deeply disappointed by the recent proposal from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to significantly reduce reimbursement rates for healthcare providers who care daily for our state’s most vulnerable citizens. In recent years, the General Assembly and NCDHHS have worked closely to build a strong Medicaid program that delivers essential services to vulnerable populations. As a practicing physician, I understand firsthand the challenge of providing quality care when reimbursement rates may not even cover the cost of services. These proposed cuts will have a substantial negative impact on every provider serving Medicaid patients, with serious consequences for access to care across North Carolina. Unfortunately, the current proposal places the burden of savings almost entirely on providers. Medicaid is a lifeline for many North Carolinians, and we cannot rely solely on provider cuts to solve budget challenges. Instead, we must focus on long-term, structural solutions—expanding value-based care arrangements, reviewing programs for cost-effectiveness, eliminating wasteful spending, and improving operational efficiency.
