ECU Medical School Scholars Visit

This week I had the privilege of sponsoring 25 students from the Brody School of Medicine to the General Assembly. They were participating in a program to learn about health policy and advocacy. During their time, I was able to give them a tour of the House floor, talk to them about the importance of advocacy, and give them a little bit of history of the Legislative building. They had meetings with numerous legislators including Speaker Hall. I am always grateful when medical folks come to the General Assembly!

Mitigating Factor/ Pretrial Use of IID (HB 789)

This week I participated in a press conference for HB 789, Mitigating Factor/ Pretrial Use of IID. This bill will establish a mitigating factor for certain persons charged with impaired driving who voluntarily equip their vehicle with an interlock breathalyzer device. This will help prevent drunk driving accidents and allow those charged to take responsibility for their actions. I am pleased to be a sponsor on this important piece of legislation.

Pitt County Fun Fact!!

In 1811 the General Assembly authorized commissioners in Pitt County to hold a lottery to raise $2,000 to build a bridge over the Tar River. The law specified that the bridge should not obstruct the passage of fish or boats. The bridge was not constructed until 1823.
