Contentnea Health

This week I had the pleasure of meeting with Contentnea Health. Contentnea Health and I were able to discuss how NC's community health centers are saving lives and taxpayer dollars. We were also able to discuss a few policy issues that make the health centers mission possible! Thank you Contentnea Health!

The Protect Children from Cannabis Act (HB 680)

On April 9th at 11am I will be hosting a press conference to talk about the recent bill I filed, The Protect Children from Cannabis Act. This piece of legislation will restrict the sale of hemp-derived products to those under 21, establish a licensing requirement for sellers, and grant enforcement authority to the state's Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) division. With the rise of unregulated hemp-derived products on the market, it’s critical that we take action to protect consumers—especially young people—from potentially harmful and untested substances. This bill ensures that these products are sold responsibly, with oversight and accountability.

Fostering Care in NC Act (HB 612)

This week I was able to support Representative Chesser in his press conference for his new bill, Fostering Care in NC Act. This piece of legislation allows a child's future to not be left hanging due to a slow judicial process. This act will make the process faster, smarter, and more compassionate. I am happy to be able to sponsor this bill and help make the foster care system in NC produce safer and faster outcomes.

Update On Bills Filed

This week I filed 2 new bills in the House this week. HB 565, Check Yes, Saves Lives, will allow people to become organ donors through their tax returns. This act will allow people to become organ donors easier and allow more lives to be saved. HB 558, Criteria for PHP Contract Procurement, was also filed this week. This bill will change the future of prepaid Medicaid healthcare contracts. Both of these bills are a continuation of my agenda for this year.

Cell Phone Free-Education (HB 87)

This week the NC House of Representatives passed HB 87, Cell Phone Free-Education. This bill was created to develop policies on limiting cell phone usage in public schools, as study shows that the presence of phones in classroom hinders learning. I am happy to support this bill as it is a step forward to bettering the education here in NC. HB 87 has been taken up by the Senate and has passed the first reading.

Pitt County Fun Fact!

The county seat, Greenville, was incorporated in 1771 as Martinsborough (named for North Carolina's last royal governor, Josiah Martin) and later renamed in honor of Revolutionary General Nathanael Greene.
