UPDATE: Protections for Unhoused Students & Funding Bills Pass Housing Committee!

Good news! Yesterday, members of the Housing Committee voted on H.B. 5259 and H.B. 5160, which both passed out for the Committee with Joint Favorable report.

There is more work to be done, including outreach to legislators throughout the rest of session. We are excited for this progress, but we're not done yet - stay tuned for more updates on priority legislation and ways to stay involved!

H.B. 5259, An Act Concerning the Education of Homeless Children and Youth

Why It's Important: More than 5,000 Connecticut students are experiencing homelessness, and the federal protections that keep them enrolled, transported, and supported are increasingly uncertain. H.B. 5259 safeguards educational stability by codifying McKinney-Vento rights in state law so students can stay connected to school no matter what happens federally.

H.B. 5160, An Act Appropriating Funds to Assist Homeless Persons

Why It's Important: Like H.B. 5032, which we testified on in the Appropriations Subcommittees on Planning & Development and Health, this bill requests funding for the homeless response system. Passing it out of committee shows that Housing Committee membership support increased funding for the work we do.
