Many of our constituents in the City of Davis, especially in East Davis, were awoken in the middle of the night by loud booming noises, repeating every few minutes, from around midnight to 8:00 am or so. These noises came from an area northeast of Davis, outside the city limits and not from the Yolo County Landfill.
After discussions with several county and city agencies, my office has collected more information about the use of bird cannons northeast of Davis. While the use of bird cannons in agriculture is a common practice in farms across Yolo County, the approach heard over the last several nights is not.
County staff is working to contact the individual or individuals responsible and inform them of best practices and appropriate uses of bird (or other animal) scaring equipment. This activity may be protected by the county's right to farm ordinance, but this level of disruption is not normal and will be addressed.
My office and I are working with the County of Yolo's Agriculture Department, both the Davis Police Department and Yolo County Sheriff, Supervisor Frerichs' Office, the City of Davis, and the Yolo County Farm Bureau to contact the individual or individuals involved and handle this issue. The Yolo County Agriculture Department has sent a team out to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum moving forward.
We will continue to provide updates as we make progress on this issue. If you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to reach out me at jim.provenza@yolocounty.org or my office at (530) 757-5553.
