"Clinical Translation of Genetic Predictors For Type 2 Diabetes"

Dr. Florez is the Chief of the Endocrine Division and the Diabetes Unit at the MGH, where he holds the John T. Potts Jr., MD Endowed Chair in Medicine. He is also Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and an Institute Member at the Broad Institute. He and his group have contributed to the performance and analysis of high-throughput genomic studies in type 2 diabetes and related traits, in international consortia such as MAGIC, GENIE, DIAGRAM, T2D-GENES, AMP-T2D, SIGMA and RADIANT, where he plays management roles. He leads the genetics initiatives of the Diabetes Prevention Program and the GRADE clinical trial, where the effects of genetic variants on specific behavioral and pharmacological preventive interventions can be assessed. He is the Principal Investigator of the Study to Understand the Genetics of the Acute Response to Metformin and Glipizide in Humans (SUGAR-MGH), and also conducts other pharmacogenetic studies at MGH. He is an author on 200+ original publications and 50+ reviews/book chapters. In addition to his research and teaching duties, he is clinically active in the MGH Diabetes Center, the Endocrine inpatient consult service, and the MGH Down Syndrome Program. In 2007 he received an MGH Physician-Scientist Development Award (PSDA) and he is a recipient of the 2010 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. In 2019 he received the Father of the Year award from the American Diabetes Association.

The Chester Pierce Research Society (CPRS) is sponsored by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI).  CPRS is a speaker series named in honor of MGH's late Professor Emeritus in Psychiatry, Chester Pierce. Dr. Pierce was the first and most senior African-American physician-scientist at MGH. CPRS is designed to promote diversity and health equity by featuring the novel research of investigators to the MGH community.

July 29, August 4 & 5
The CDI continues to partner with Mass General departments to expand the pipeline of students who are underrepresented in medicine (UiM) and interested in pursuing careers in academic medicine through the Summer Research Trainee Program (SRTP.) Students are paired with MGH investigators and conduct novel research projects in basic science labs, clinical research sites, health policy, and health services settings over 8 weeks during the summer. The SRTP Class of 2021 will be presenting their research projects to the MGH community on:

  • Thursday, July 29 @ 11 am - 1:15 pm
  • Wednesday, August 4 @ 1 pm - 4:30 pm
  • Thursday, August 5 @ 10 am - 1:30 pm
 
Additional details with presentation logistics (presenters, labs/research sites, timings and research project titles) will be sent under separate cover closer to the presentation dates.
 
SRTP 2021 is funded by the MGH 10 Pt Structural Equity Plan, ECOR, the MGPO, the President’s Office and the department sponsoring the student.

Special Seminar of the MGH Building Up Scholars Poster Presentation - July 20 @ 5 pm ET
Join the poster session which showcases the research of our National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) Scholars on July 20th at 5:00 pm ET.* The NRMN scholars are participating in a study that is focused on diversifying the workforce. This study is funded by NIH and is randomizing 26 universities to test the effectiveness of an intervention focused on building the research careers of postdocs and junior faculty, which was developed at the University of Pittsburgh. For more information about this project click here.

The David F. Torchiana, MD Fellowship in Health Policy and Management is now accepting applications for a 2-year fellowship, beginning summer 2022. Come to a virtual information session on 7/28 from 1 – 2 pm via Zoom. Click here to join the session.
The fellowship fosters the growth and development of early-career academic physicians who have completed their residency or clinical fellowships and are interested in health policy and management. Under guidance of Jason Wasfy, MD and other fellowship faculty, fellows gain exposure and competency in many aspects of health care management, including:

  • Care delivery innovation
  • Hospital operations and governance
  • Pay-for-performance
  • Global payment
  • Physician contracting
  • Quality and safety
  • Project management

Visiting Research Internship Program Closing Ceremony: Interns Presentation

The Visiting Research Internship Program (VRIP) is an eight-week mentored, summer research program designed to enrich medical students' interest in research and health-related careers, particularly clinical/translational research careers.
In addition to a mentored clinical/translational research experience, VRIP students participate in weekly seminars with Harvard faculty focusing on topics such as research methodology, health disparities, ethics, and career paths. Participants also have the opportunity to participate in offerings of other Harvard Medical School programs such as career development seminars and networking events. Read more...

Alister Francois Martin, MD, Instructor in Emergency Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital is a recipient of 2021 Office for Diversity Inclusion and Community Partnership (DICP) Faculty Fellowship Award. Massachusetts General Hospital Emergency Department (MGH ED) recently started Vot-ER which is a new operational initiative aimed at offering patients who are not registered to vote an opportunity to register using an online voter registration platform while in the ED. Our analysis aims to measure the rates of voter registration at Boston area hospitals and healthcare organizations through the 2021 Boston Mayoral election cycle. Sherri-Ann Burnett-Bowie, MD, MPH, clinical investigator in the MGH Endocrine Unit, Associate Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and Director of Multicultural Affairs in the Department of Medicine, has received the 2021 American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) Paula Stern Achievement Award. This award recognizes a woman in the bone field who has made significant scientific achievements and who has promoted the professional development/advancement of women in the field.
