Greetings Beaver Nation,
We just wrapped up Winter Sports last week and we have had some awesome performances this season. We had State competition participants in Boys Swim and Dive, both Boys and Girls Wrestling, Girls Bowling, our Cheer Team placed 15th at Nationals and our Gymnastics team finished 4th in the State!

In addition to these performances, we also had some other important events worth mentioning that helped make this season memorable. This year, we had the opportunity to start two new athletic programs for female athletes. Our new Flag Football team was coached by Laura Lehni and assisted by Robin Dowdy, who both helped create a cohesive group that grew in skill over the course of the season. The team was led by captains Tristan Cooper and Jennifer Garcia Cruz and had huge wins against Ingraham and Rainier Beach. Great job this season, ladies!

|
In addition to Flag Football, we also started a Girls Bowling program. Our Girls Bowling team was coached by BHS art teacher and Head Golf Coach, Scott Cachopo. Bowling had a great inaugural season. We had 22 girls turn out and awarded 17 Varsity letters. We had some really close matches and finished the season with five wins and nine losses. We sent two girls to the State Championships where they did a great job representing Ballard High School!

In Girls Basketball, we had three strong teams this season that respectively competed every night, showing much improvement and growth as individuals and teams. We enjoyed having fans back in the stands this year!
According to Head Coach Michelle Gallagher, “Varsity was challenged this year being in the top division of the Metro League, playing each of the strongest teams twice. This team was resilient and always pushed to get better and grow stronger as a team. While we did not get wins in league, it prepared us for the post-season which included two big wins to get into the District Tournament for the second consecutive season!
"Our themed 'It's Bigger than Basketball' nights were very special! Rally for a Cause raised 200 pounds of food for the Ballard Food Bank and Title IX Night was amazing, bringing in so many fans to celebrate female participation in sports!
"Thank you to our Seniors, Emma, Diyanka, Nevaeh, Shea, and Laura, who showed tremendous leadership and passion on and off the court!"

Boys Basketball was led by first year Head Coach Lorenzo Durant III who had this to say about the season: “This team should be very proud of themselves. They have put in so much blood, sweat and tears while overcoming so many players being out due to sickness. The boys finished with an impressive 10-4 League record and 10-10 overall and finished 2nd in the Metro Sound Division.
The Beavers are losing five Seniors this year: Jack Swartz, Tom Fathi, Jacob Nelson, Ralph Stinebrickner and Max Sevier. We all will miss these young men and know they will all be great role models to our Ballard community and future Beavers.”

Boys Swim & Dive had an outstanding season. According to Coach Kyle Morean: “We had a great time at the State Tournament. All four participants had their best swims together, two days in a row! It was pretty special. We got the prelims race recorded too. Kyle Chew finished 17th in the 100 butterfly. The Medley Relay team (Kian Vae’ena backstroke 26.31; Evan Mast breaststroke 26.68; Kyle Chew butterfly 24.16; Nathan Williams freestyle 23.78) finished 11th place (the 10th fastest time all-around) and with a 1:40.93 they set a new Ballard School record, besting the previous record from 2014.” Congratulations to Coach Morean too, named Metro League Coach of the Year!

|
We had another successful season in Gymnastics. Head Coach Stephanie Gundel, had this to say about it:
“The Gymnastics team wrapped up a fantastic season over the weekend. Over the last three and a half months, the team had an undefeated regular season, won their second consecutive Metro League title, placed 2nd at the District I/II Championships, and had a season-high score at the State Championships, placing 4th!
|
|
"The team was led all season long by juniors Alex Bullock and Naomi Kildal, who won a total of 25 (out of 30) event and all around titles during the regular season. They placed 10th and 9th all around at State, respectively, and each qualified to 3 event finals. Alex placed 11th on vault, 12th on bars and 4th on floor, and Naomi placed 11th on bars, 10th on floor and 3rd on beam. Sophomore Brooke Adkins qualified to finals on beam, placing 16th. Other key contributors this season were Sophomores Caitlyn Adkins and Dylan Kelly, and Juniors Linden Fatland and Justene Li. With every State competitor returning for 2024, we're already looking ahead to next year! Follow us on Instagram at @Ballard Gymnastics”

Our Wrestling team this year was huge. Coach Jared Daniels, his coaching staff and our Beaver wrestlers put in the hard work this year and we definitely saw results. The team grew in size so much, that we had to have partial wrestling practice in the Activity Center!
Congratulations to Cass Sylves, Jackie Benson, Miles Price, Simone Moreno and Ben Kildal, and alternates Lazlo Rudin-Davis, James Goodall, Hayden Wiggens, Luca Sadder-Miller, Tommy Megal and Harrison Kuckleberg, who represented the Beaver Nation at the Tacoma Dome this year!

|
In Dance, Coach Bethany Nielcen started her 8th year as Head Coach. Her dancers have been battling tough all year competing in the Hip Hop and Dance categories. They are getting ready to compete at the District Tournament on March 11 at Redmond High School. A solid performance there and we’ll be back at the Dance/Drill State Championships, March 24-25 at the Sun Dome in Yakima.

In Cheer our team was back to competition for the first time in several years. They had an outstanding season. Last week, Coach Amber Torres and her squad traveled to Anaheim, California to participate in the 2023 National Cheerleading Competition. Our athletes did well and ended up with a 15th place trophy in the largest division. Way to represent, Ballard Cheer!

For Club Sports, congratulations to our Mixed (Coed) Ultimate teams for a successful season! Both Varsity (above) and JV (right) had winning records this year. The Varsity team record was 5-4 and we made the playoffs as the 8th seed. Varsity ended up in 4th place and JV had a winning season as well. The Ultimate world never rests and now we are gearing up for the Spring girls’ season. For the latest on BUF, visit ballardultimate.org.

Unified Basketball had a great season getting back on the court. Fans cheered on the team in the District competition on Feb. 11 at Kamiak High School. After two impressively close games, the team came in 7th overall. Sportsmanship awards were given to 3-time winner, Ella Eckhart, and 1st time winner, Liv Scheuerell, for their performance on and off the court.
Our Unified Basketball team was able to participate in our Jam the Dam celebration for the first time in four years. Thanks to Unified Coordinator Robyn Maddess for putting on such an awesome event, and coaches Rachel Schmidt and Kiana Peterson for all your hard work this season.

The Ballard High School Athletic Booster Club is a volunteer group of parents working together to support, promote, and advocate for all BHS athletes. We believe quality athletic programs enrich the high school educational experience. Our focus is on programs that benefit all BHS athletes, and we are especially interested in promoting school-wide community and helping remove barriers to play.

|
I want to support BHS athletes! What can I do?
-
Sign up for an ABC membership every year. Your membership fees directly support the projects listed above.
-
Buy and wear Beaver Gear, especially when you are out supporting our Beavers at sporting events.
- Plan on attending the various social and fundraising events we host throughout the school year. Help us build community while we celebrate our athletes!
- Become a team parent, or offer to help your existing team parent -- volunteering to help out with a team's administrative, fundraising, or communications means the coach has more time to focus on athletes.
- Make a direct donation to your team!
