A Note on Tourism:

Tourism plays an important role in the Hampton Roads' economy, not only forming a large percentage of employment and income in the region, but also serving as one of the region's basic sector industries that bring in outside dollars which allow local businesses and services to grow. The Virginia Tourism Corporation indicates that June and July are the most important months for tourism in Hampton Roads, and thus this is a good time to check in on the progress of the industry.

Final Report Pending from Eastern Virginia Groundwater Management Advisory Committee
Following a final meeting on July 7, 2017, the Eastern Virginia Groundwater Management Advisory Committee (EVGMAC) circulated among its membership the final draft Report to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)  and Virginia General Assembly. 2017 Virginia Outdoors Survey   
parent-child-beach-sm.jpg Since the 1970s, the Virginia Outdoors Survey (VOS) has been conducted as a random survey of Virginia residents. The survey assesses the popularity and needs for outdoor recreation facilities across the commonwealth. For the first time, the 2017 survey is open to the general public. The Department of Conservation and Recreation invites you and anyone you wish to share the link with to take the 2017 Virginia Outdoors Survey. The online survey will close at 5 p.m. on Aug. 24.  CLICK HERE TO TAKE THE 2017 VIRGINIA OUTDOORS SURVEY    
Public Meeting Scheduled for Input on Draft Regional Solid Waste Management Plan  
The HRPDC is requesting input on the draft Regional Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) for Southeastern Virginia 2017-2040. The public input period begins August 3, 2017 and will extend to August 25, 2017. In addition, a public meeting on the draft Plan will be held Thursday, August 10, 2017, 6 PM, at the HRPDC Board Room, 723 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320. READ MORE    
Hampton Roads Hazard Mitigation Plan 
In 2017, the Hampton Roads Hazard Mitigation Plan was created and adopted by the 22 cities, counties and towns within the Hampton Roads region. The adoption of a true regional plan culminated a two-year planning process that updated and combined six separate plans.   
Grants to Boost Regional Projects of
Earlier this summer, the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund and Keep Virginia Beautiful awarded our committees a total of $13,100 in separate grants, both of which will go a long way toward supporting the work we are honored to do - encouraging environmental stewardship throughout Hampton Roads. 2017 Virginia Sales Tax Holiday 
State Tax Holiday Image Beginning at 12:01am on Friday, August 4th through 11:59pm on Sunday, August 6th, consumers in Virginia will be able to purchase certain goods tax-free as part of Virginia's Sales Tax Holiday.  READ MORE    
Mini-Grants for Many Projects
While it's an honor to receive grants, it's just as rewarding to give them. This past fiscal year, provided $6,335 in funds through our Environmental Education Mini-Grant Program to support classroom projects throughout Hampton Roads. More than 4,000 students at 13 schools participated in a variety of projects that included everything from sprucing up the school yard and organizing campus-wide recycling programs, to conducting field investigations along nearby waterways.  READ MORE
