| | SJC IN THE NEWS: NBC LA HIGHLIGHTS BREAD & ROSES CAFÈ CHANGING LIVES WITH DIGNITY | | |
We're proud to share that St. Joseph Center was recently featured on NBC’s California Live! Reporter Amber Pfister visited our Bread & Roses Café in Venice to highlight what makes it so special.
Our café is more than a soup kitchen. It’s a place where our neighbors experiencing homelessness can enjoy made-to-order, nutritious meals in a dignified, restaurant-style setting. As Head Manager, Chef James Cunningham shared, "Everything is made from our heart.” Chef Cristela added, “I don’t need to be forced out of bed–I’m happy to be here and make a difference.”
Last year, Bread & Roses Café marked 35 years of service. This story is a remarkable reminder that our mission continues and community care is valuable.

| | FUELING FUTURES: ST. JOSEPH CENTER BACK-TO-SCHOOL FUND GIVES KIDS A FRESH START | | |
Thanks to our donors, volunteers, and staff, St. Joseph Center Back-to-School Fund is making a real difference. We're providing youth from low-income families with the tools they need to succeed, from backpacks with school supplies and healthy snacks to other necessities like clothing and shoes. A backpack distribution breakfast was recently provided to students and families at our Westmont Vista Bridge Housing program.
Additionally, we are grateful to organizations like the National Charity League for helping to fill backpacks. This year, our goal is to help 1,200 students, a significant increase from last year, giving every student a fresh start.
Our Back-to-School drive ends August 29th! Donate today and give a student the confidence to focus on their education.

We’re excited to announce that St. Joseph Center President & CEO, Dr. Ryan J. Smith, has joined the Board of Directors at Abode Communities. Founded in 1968 during the Civil Rights Movement, Abode began as an all-volunteer organization addressing urban inequities through civic engagement and has evolved into a leader in affordable and supportive housing across California.
Today, Abode is a mission-driven nonprofit that specializes in service-enhanced, affordable housing—combining real estate development, property management, and strong resident services to stabilize and uplift communities. Over more than five decades, the organization has developed 80+ housing developments, provided over 4,600 homes, and served upwards of 10,500 residents, all backed by a community investment of around $1 billion, with more in the pipeline.
