DIGNITY FOR LOVED ONES BURIED ON HART ISLAND

Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 9th, Council Member Rodriguez will be joined by elected officials and advocates to announce the reintroduction of two bills related to Hart Island: one would transfer the island from the Department of Correction to the Department of Parks and Recreation, the other would establish ferry service to the island.
Hart Island is the site of a massive City Cemetery of over one million bodies of people who could not afford other burial arrangements or are not identified by relatives. The island was purchased by the City of New York in 1868 and has since been the site of a psychiatric and other medical institutions, juvenile delinquent facility, and a prison, prior to serving as a potter's field.

Mañana, miércoles 9 de mayo, el Concejal Ydanis Rodríguez se unirá a funcionarios electos y activistas para anunciar la reintroducción de dos proyectos de ley relacionados con Hart Island: uno transferiría gerencia de la isla del Departamento de Corrección al Departamento de Parques y Recreación, el otro establecería el servicio de ferry a la isla.
En Hart Island se encuentra una fosa común de más de un millón de cuerpos de personas que no pudieron costear ser enterrados en otro cementerio o no fueron identificadas por familiares. La isla fué comprada por la ciudad de Nueva York en 1868. Desde ese entonces las isla ha sido sede instituciones psiquiátricas y otras instituciones médicas, un centro de detención de menores y una prisión antes de servir como fosa común.
