Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Every week we will give you 5 things to explore.

Five things to do during the next week:
  1. Click HERE to read about pioneer Black Americans who don’t often make the history books. You may not know their names, but these courageous Black Americans changed history.
  2. Eat at or order from a local African restaurant. Our recommendation this week is Daras Africana Market & Kitchen in Algonquin. Click HERE to visit their website.
  3. Prepare an African dish at home. Click HERE to view a Nigerian Moi Moi (bean cake) recipe.
  4. Click HERE to watch "The Black Church" - a video by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. He explores the roots of African American religion beginning with the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the extraordinary ways enslaved Africans preserved and adapted their faith practices from the brutality of slavery to emancipation.
  5. Learn something new about the African continent. Click HERE for a clickable map. You can click on the country or capital for more details. This week we recommend you find Nigeria and read more about the country of origin for this week's restaurant and recipe.
