Operational Overview
Preparations continue for resuming courses on Monday, March 23, 2020. Campuses remain closed except for limited pre-approved activities. Concerns or problems with readiness to resume instructi on or any other operational matter should be shared with supervisors ASAP. Please be patient with all staff and students as we launch our transformed operation next week.

Consistent with guidance from the Florida Department of Education, FSCJ has ceased regular onsite activities and moved classes and other services online. However, there are limited exceptions under these guidelines for students to come to campus , and all exceptions require pre-arrangements as described below. Any student arriving at an FSCJ site without authorization under one of these exceptions will be turned away:
  • Students without a means of internet access can call the Library and Learning Commons at either South or Downtown campus to schedule a time to work in the open lab. Under current CDC guidelines, each space can accommodate only 10 people who must also practice social distancing while in the space.
  1. Students must call ahead and make an appointment, or they will be turned away upon arrival.
  2. Keep in mind that internet providers are currently offering services free of charge, so the limited computer access in LLC labs are for those without a device that can go online.
  • Students who are completing onsite testing at the direction of their instructor or taking the PERT assessment. Most campus assessment centers are open for these purposes and operating under current CDC guidelines that each space can accommodate only 10 people who must also practice social distancing while in the space.
  1. Keep in mind that many instructors will be using online assessments that do not require the use of the assessment center.
  2. Instructors will provide information on how they are conducting assessments and how to schedule appointments if the assessments are occurring onsite. Students must have an appointment before arriving or they will be turned away.
  • Students who are enrolled in specified classes with applied laboratory components, including certain career certificate courses, A.S. program courses, and other approved lab/demonstration courses.
  1. Instructors in this limited set of courses are able to schedule time for students to complete applied / hands-on teaching and learning onsite.
  2. Any such activities must be organized so that they operate under current CDC guidelines that each space can accommodate only 10 people who must also practice social distancing while in the space.
  3. Students should not come to campus for any course-based activity unless specifically authorized by an instructor for a particular place and time. Any student arriving without an instructors permission to attend an organized activity will be turned away. Instructors must have approval from their supervising administrator prior to providing this authorization.

Your most important action now: Connect with your students
All faculty should connect with students as soon as possible, even if it is just a simple notification that they should stand by for further course information. Very few people have this all figured out, and that’s ok. Work one step at a time, beginning with some type of student communication. Even a simple placeholder is invaluable for giving students confidence to remain engaged. A former FSCJ faculty member publicly shared this note with colleagues, it is an excellent resource and point of view.

College communication with students
FSCJ continues regular communication with students about College operations, student resources and appeal options. These communications will continue to be posted under the “Students” section on FSCJ’s COVID-19 site .

Instructions for FSCJ Online:
FSCJ offers numerous resources to faculty transitioning classes to online modality. Following is a comprehensive list of such resources:

Notes and Canvas Tips for the Academic Technology Team
  • A link to the Online Now! resources can be found within the Canvas Faculty Community. The FSCJ Online Now link will take you to the course template and guide, as well as a link to recorded webinar and a Q&A discussion board. The Canvas Faculty Community can be found on your Canvas Dashboard or within All Courses. For assistance in the community or if you do not have access, please email edtech@fscj.edu.
  • Along with the abundance of support you have from the various teams and faculty peers you have at FSCJ, you can also contact Canvas Support 24/7. A link to begin a live chat, as well as a dedicated faculty phone line, can be found within the Canvas Help menu item (within the blue navigation bar).
  • As people use more video in their courses, it may be helpful to remind everyone how easy and important it is to caption videos. The team has published a blog post on the topic and provided the same information in a document I’ve attached. Please use whichever you feel is best.
  • At the start of every term, our most common issue is when content is not published. Once your online content is ready for students to view, be sure to publish the course AND each content item that you would like to make available.
  • Please visit the Academic Technology blog for new resources as well as those we’ve published in the past. We have several articles posted within the last 48 hours on working with and troubleshooting video in Canvas.

Career Certificate (Clock Hour) Programs:
If you are teaching in a Career Certificate/Clock Hour program or course – please be aware that we understand that you have unique needs for this transition to online instruction. We have provided specialized training for this group of faculty – if you missed the session, please feel free to reach out to Karen Arlington ( karen.arlington@fscj.edu ) for more information. And even t hough our clock classes may have different deadlines, the student options remain the same as far as whether they choose to remain in the class or seek a waiver/refund. Students are still expected to meet the attendance requirements – we may just be using different methods to ensure that all students have the chance to complete the program.

CWE Programs:
As with the rest of the College, Continuing Workforce Education (CWE) is currently working to move our classes online. Our Team is working to ensure that our English Language Institute, medical (CNA, phlebotomy, and Nursing Refresher/Remediation), Lean Six Sigma, PHR/SPHR and other students have pathways forward for finishing the semester. Furthermore, we are adding online offerings, and talking with community organizations to find solutions for emerging workforce needs. Lastly, please don’t forget that we have online offerings in Real Estate, Environmental Safety (i.e. OSHA 10 & 30), and many computer programs, business solutions, and national certification programs. If we can assist anyone, please let us know.
