From all accounts, today’s collective relaunch of Academics was highly successful. There are certainly wrinkles to iron out and open issues to address, but congratulations to all on what has been achieved so far. Here are some operational details:

Connecting with students
If, for any reason, you were unable to connect with students today, it is now an urgent priority. Even if your regularly scheduled face-to-face or hybrid class met later in a typical week, we decrease student confusion and increase operational quality along many dimensions every time you connect with your students. If you have yet to do so this week, it is critical that you do so now.

Operational status
FSCJ’s operational status remains unchanged. Campuses are closed for all regular teaching and learning activities. There are pre-approved exceptions that allow students to visit specific campus sites for assessment appointments, appointments to use an LLC computer (for those who have no other alternative to get online), and to complete applied training under an instructor’s supervision. All such activities require prior approval and only instructors who have received supervisory approval to conduct required hands-on training , may proceed with scheduling students for this purpose. We did run into a situation where security was unaware that approved students would be arriving to a site; we are working with Director Bass and his team to review our communication plan.

Assessment
Assessment activity was relatively slow today, but the volume of incoming proctoring requests was very large. We continue to evaluate projected demand against capacity and will soon be sharing information about an FSCJ-funded option to use automated proctoring online in support of our online, hybrid, and ground based classes. Updates on capacity and demand will continue as the picture evolves. Please be mindful of the need to share limited proctoring resources across all of our instructors, courses and students in designing your assessment strategy.

On Point
Dr. Avendano will host an OnPoint tomorrow (Tuesday) at 1:30 p.m. He always takes questions on the fly, but you can help tailor the presentation and ensure your question is addressed by sending them ahead of time to [email protected]
