UPDATED ORANCO BOWMEN MONTHLY NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER - 2026

ORANCO BOWMEN ARCHERY CLUB

Club President

By: Al Wiscovitch - Club President

Hello Oranco Members,

I hope most of you have been staying away from this hot weather we are having.

I would like to thank Mark Van Patten for putting the Arrows after Dark event on. It was a great shoot and met a lot of new shooters who came out to this event. Mark and our team of volunteers really put together a great night shoot. I was able to get this shoot in and was very impressed with the course. I hope we can make this a Regular annual event as I believe people really enjoyed it with the right date and time of year it could be a very successful event for our club.

With the hunting season well on its way I'd like to hear from some of you guys and gals we haven't heard any success stories yet? I started scouting last weekend and boy I must say the wind condition was horrible. I've never been in the Sierras with that type of wind gusting through all the canyons and creeks made for a hard weekend of glassing and scouting. I will head out again this coming weekend and continue my scouting as opening season is just a few weeks away.

Yes, we were able to get in some trout fishing when we managed to hide away from some of the gust of wind that we were getting. We were able to reach a few limits. I’m slowly building up my wild game freezer.

As for Dove opener, I was able to get out for a few days on a friend’s ranch and hunted. Boy was it hot out there on his ranch. 108° first day 104° on the second day. Came away with my limit of birds.

If some of you have been shooting our Practice Range you probably have seen that we put out 900 targets at the 60, 50, and 40 yard those will stay up for the month of September as we shoot the 900 state championship. That should give you some practice before you get out and shoot if you haven't signed up there's still plenty of room. You'll need to talk to David Bacon, he can help you guys get signed up.

Our next big shoot is the NAFAC (North American Field Archery Championships). This is a 2-day you can camp out and have a nice weekend of shooting and hanging with club members. So put this on your schedule!

Thanks for reading this newsletter.

Club Vice President

By: Pete Whitworth - Club Vice President

Hi everyone.

I am Pete, the Vice President and as such it is my responsibility to run our club invitational shoots. I also help our President Al Wiscovitch deal with the day to day running of the club in general, interfacing with the Parks Department, Corp of Engineers, Fire Department, and most importantly we handle any complaints or issues that any of you have. Naturally you are always free to voice any issues at our club meetings, held on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM in the clubhouse, however; Al and I are here to keep things running smoothly on a daily basis. So, when problems arise, you should always feel free to contact either of us for immediate help.

We are in that period of the year when it is so hot at the range that it is not sensible to run any invitational shoots, so I generally spend this time on range maintenance or upgrades along with Al, Brad, and Jim. The main thing we have done this last month is to bring my mill to ORANCO, and we have set it up in the enclosed area where we keep the tractor. It will not be used as a mill, but as a pin router instead. It is how I have been able to make the tomahawk heads for the first place trophies we use at the upcoming Tomahawk shoot. I am also looking into the possibility of making other first place trophies in the same fashion. The Oranco arrowhead comes to mind, and I am looking at using it for the Rendezvous shoot. We will see how that works out moving forward.

My next invitational shoot is our signature shoot, the Tomahawk that I just mentioned, it is scheduled for October 18th so put that on your calendar and plan ahead to get out and camp with us for the weekend. I will be there from Saturday morning for setup, through the tear down work party on Monday. Naturally, I will need a good crew on Saturday the 17th for setup and general cleanup. Melinda will need help to run the food concessions during the shoot on Sunday the 18th, and I will need another crew on Monday morning to do the tear down and put the animals away. My work parties always start at 8:30, and Melinda’s start earlier to get the breakfast ready. I do not require reservations, and I am happy for all of the help that I can get. Melinda does take RSVP’s and she always needs a lot of help, so please contact her to reserve a spot on her crew. We are looking into some sort of activity on Saturday evening. One single activity. We have already managed to prove that trying to do more than one does not work out. Maybe a shooting event (clout for those of you who are new to archery terminology), or a game . I think that the one that Mark tried at his night shoot was a great idea, so I would actually like to give that a good try. We want to make it fun for you to come out and camp for the weekend. You will have all day to practice, and you will be here bright and early to sign up on Sunday morning at 7:00.

As always, if you have any Oranco issues, feel free to call or text me. If you call, leave a message, because I do not answer numbers that are not already in my phone.

That’s all for now folks.

Practice Range Etiquette

It has come to my attention that there are quite a few members who need to be reminded about what is - and what is not - acceptable behavior on the practice range. There are signs posted that clearly state a maximum of 8 arrows per end. Understand that this rule is to keep things moving so nobody is spending an unreasonable amount of time waiting for the opportunity to simply pull their arrows. I have received complaints about people shooting as many as 12 to 15 arrows per end while the rest of the line waits for them to finish. This is unacceptable.

If you’re the only person on the range, then I don’t think anyone would have a problem with you shooting as many arrows as your quiver can hold before you go pull them. But if there is even one other person on the range with you, the 8 arrow maximum rule is the standard and must be followed.

Situational awareness is very important on the roving ranges and on the practice range. If there are multiple people on the practice range with you, be aware of how many people are still on the line shooting. Look left and right before nocking an arrow. If you’re the only person with a bow in your hand, do not nock that arrow. Set your bow down and call “Clear” so everyone can pull their arrows.

A lot of members have busy schedules that only allow for short practice sessions here and there. Those people should not be wasting their time waiting for someone to shoot more arrows than what’s allowed. And highly animated conversations and/or loud music are similarly counterproductive when micro-tuning a sight or trying to focus on improving your release. We foster and promote many disciplines of archery at our club and we all have our goals within our preferred style of archery. Please be mindful of how your actions are helping or hurting those individuals while they’re practicing.

Thank you.

Oranco Bowmen Archery Range

Occupying about 45 acres, Oranco Bowmen Archery Club is a NFAA certified 5-star range. This is the highest certification given by NFAA. We are the only range in Southern California with practice butts from 10-80 yards in 5-yard increments. If you need a place to "dial in" your bow, this is it!

Oranco also has two NFAA roving courses: Our Valley Course is a level 28-target course, consisting of 14 animal and 14 hunter paper targets. For those who desire a bit more of a physical challenge, our Mountain Course is a hilly 28-target course offering 14 Field targets and another set of 14 animal paper targets. The Layout changes occasionally.

Oranco is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

Please remember to lock your vehicles when you are not present and always take your equipment home with you. We have received reports about stolen equipment, and want everyone to understand that you alone are responsible for your belongings. We advise you to put your identification information on your belongings and try not to leave anything unattended.

Remember: We are open to the public on Sundays and during shoots. During these events it is much more difficult to track who is on range property, especially if people do not sign in at the office.

Be safe and responsible everyone.
