Carnival & History Trip July 20 - 28

Kelly of the Compass and Camera travel blog wrote about her adventure at Carnival here. An illuminating non-professional video is here.

The trip is strong on traditional culture and insight into the complicated history of the US and Cuba since the 19th century. It includes visiting the city of Guantanamo and the town of Caimanera adjacent to the base.

The draft itinerary is here. If there is sufficient interest, we will add Holguin and Baracoa. Most participants are spending a few days on their own in Havana, then joining the group to drive to Santiago with a stop-over in Camaguey. For additional information, write director@ffrd.org. Click here to register on line before midnight June 4th. Pay your deposit at the same time to satisfy OFAC.

Departures from Miami to Santiago on American Airlines are late enough and returns from Holguin to Ft. Lauderdale on Jet Blue are early enough that an overstay in Florida is usually not necessary. The approximate in-country cost for a single traveler is $2,300 in a hotel or $1,600 plus the room charge in a bed and breakfast.

Travel agents are welcome to send or personally lead their clients on this program. Santiago's Carnival is Cuba's finest and perhaps the best of the Caribbean. Agents are free to add a service fee for their clients to the charges we pass on from Cubanacan.

For the Cuban perspective on Caimanera and the base, see the video "All Guantanamo is Ours".
