Submit your abstract to our American Geophysical Union (AGU) session by July 31st | |
We are excited to announce our session at the upcoming 2024 AGU conference: “Providing Accessible and Credible Greenhouse Gas Information from the US Government and Partners to Meet User Needs” (SY042). During this session, we will demonstrate how the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center (US GHG Center) is playing a pivotal role in implementing the “National Strategy to Advance an Integrated US Greenhouse Gas Measurement, Monitoring, and Information System” (GHGMMIS).
The session will spotlight the collaborative efforts and activities among federal agencies and stakeholders that foster user-driven research, the development of routine products, investments in advanced observing and verification capabilities, and the creation of stakeholder driven tools during the initial phase (2023-2024) of the US GHG Center. We will also discuss forthcoming refinements and co-development initiatives between the US GHG Center and its stakeholders planned for 2025 and beyond.

Save the date for our Annual US GHG Center Stakeholder Forum: December 4-5, 2024 | |

The US GHG Center will host a Stakeholder Forum on December 4-5, 2024 in the DC area (College Park, MD). The forum precedes the annual AGU conference in Washington, DC (December 9-13). During the forum, we’ll see the progress made during the beta phase of the Center and engage in strategic discussions to guide our future direction for 2025 and beyond.
Registration details will be available shortly. We may also plan optional events and activities on December 6, details TBD.

EPA and DOE Announce $850 Million for Methane Reduction | The EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) and DOE (U.S. Department of Energy) have announced $850 million in funding to reduce methane pollution from the oil and gas sectors as part of the Administration’s Investing in America program. This funding aims to enhance methane monitoring, measurement, quantification, and reduction, focusing on small operators and innovative technologies. Natural gas and oil facilities are the nation’s largest industrial source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas and “super pollutant.” The funding will support community engagement, environmental justice goals, and job creation, aligning with the Justice40 initiative. EPA Announces $4.3 Billion for Community-Led Pollution Reduction Projects | The EPA will provide $4.3 billion to communities across the country to cut pollution from climate change. Projects span 30 states and one Tribe, and will center on GHG pollution in buildings, transportation, industry, electricity, waste, and agriculture. This funding is part of the Inflation Reduction Act’s focus on empowering climate change action in states, cities, and communities in the U.S. | |

The US GHG Center had several presentations at the 20th International Workshop on GHG Measurements from Space (IWGGMS). Over the past two months, several new updates and enhancements have been incorporated into the US GHG Center portal (beta):
- New atmospheric correction data layer for NASA MiCASA Land Carbon Flux datasets
- Improved data layer information display in the Exploration environment
- Redesigned date picker tool in the Exploration environment

This new data insight reviews the capabilities of the Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) instrument aboard the International Space Station and AVIRIS-3, a new NASA hyperspectral airborne instrument. Both use advanced imaging spectrometers to obtain highly detailed data on methane super emitter events. | | |
