All other categories posted lower U.S. export totals in 2022 as follows: OCC/unbleached kraft (down 11.7% to 9,450,114 mt); mixed/unsorted (down 2.7% to 2,648,465 mt); newsprint (down 19.1% to 540,718 mt); and mechanical pulp (down 56.5% to 180,317 mt).
By country, the U.S. exported the most recovered paper to India—at 3,645,638 mt—though that total was 5% lower than India’s U.S. imports in 2021. Mexico was the second-highest importer of U.S. recovered fiber in 2022, at 2,315,598 mt—a 2.9% increase compared with the previous year. And Thailand was third, with its 1,829,877 mt of U.S. imported fiber up 2% from 2021.
Overall, U.S recycled paper exports to the top 10 countries decreased 5.7%, to 14,016,228 mt, in 2022 compared with the prior year.
