US and Japan Move to Support the Yen

The US and Japan have taken the rare step of jointly intervening to support the yen after the Japanese currency fell to a fresh 40-year low. The move marks the first coordinated action of its kind since 2011 and reflects growing concern over the wider impact of a weak yen on global markets.

Japan’s historically low interest rates, compared with the US, have made the yen less attractive to investors, while broader economic pressures have added to the currency’s decline. With both countries signalling they may act again if needed, the intervention highlights the importance of currency stability in an increasingly fragile global economy. EU Calls for Stronger Border Action After Ceuta Crossings

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for stronger, united action on border security after tens of thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into Spain’s Ceuta. The situation has prompted emergency talks among EU interior ministers and renewed debate over how Europe manages irregular migration at critical border points.

While Spain says many migrants have now returned to Morocco, the crossings have strained relations among some EU member states and raised calls for stronger monitoring, improved early warning systems, action against smuggling networks and closer cooperation with partner countries. The developments highlight the growing pressure on Europe to balance border security, humanitarian concerns and shared responsibility. Read more in the full report.
