Have You Seen Our Marx Library Instagram Live?
|
|
Marx Library LIVE began in Fall 2017, when Beth Shepard and Stephanie Ard teamed up to produce a weekly livestream reference session. Initially, the program was hosted on Facebook, but after examining social media demographics, the librarians moved to Instagram Live to better reach our target undergraduate audience. During the fall and spring semesters, Beth and Stephanie host LIVE episodes on Tuesdays at 1:45, so students can watch between classes.
The goal of the project is to increase outreach by using a platform familiar to younger students. Each episode of Marx Library LIVE is approximately fifteen minutes long and is
designed to address a number of common issues faced by the library’s Reference & Instruction Department. First, the episodes answer commonly asked questions, such as
How do I print?
and
How do I find peer-reviewed articles?
Second, the librarians attempt to present themselves as relaxed, unscripted, and personable, hoping to dispel students’ anxiety about visiting the library and asking librarians for help. Finally, students can ask questions and share ideas through Instagram comments, providing another point of contact between them and the library.
Each video is also uploaded to the Marx Library’s YouTube channel so that students can view it after the live broadcast has ended.

Have you been accessing Kanopy lately only to get a message that the film you want to watch is not available in your library? There is a reason for that. Kanopy offers the USA community access to more than 30,000 titles on a film-by-film licensing system. This streaming service has proven to be very popular across the university. It is, however, extremely expensive.
In order to continue to provide access to Kanopy content, while also controlling cost, the USA University Libraries has begun evaluating requests that are not from the library's top fifteen providers. Evaluation will be done using the criteria delineated below.
Films from the library's top 15 providers and those already licensed from providers outside the top fifteen will continue to be available

without having to request the titles.
Preference for requested films is given to titles that will be used:
- to support a specific USA course or courses,
- for academic or research purposes, or
- by recognized USA organizations for USA-sponsored events.
The USA Libraries also offer the following streaming video services:

USA Libraries Represented at the Southern Miss Institutional Repository Conference (SMIRC)
|
|
Four librarian representatives from USA Libraries (Robert Britton, Deborah Gurt, Muriel Nero, Ellen Wilson) recently attended the Southern Miss Institutional Repository Conference (SMIRC). Attendees learned about the many ways institutional repository managers are benefiting the faculty, students, and communities of their institutions. The conference consisted of presentations, panel discussions, and workshops that included such topics as choosing the best institutional repository platform, best practices, documentation, strategic decision-making, digital preservation, advocacy, and using the institutional repository to support and promote scholarly activity. Moving forward, these representatives will use the knowledge gained by their attendance to further investigate the possibility of creating and managing an institutional repository for the University.
