Biomedical Librarians Present Poster at the
Charleston Conference in Charleston, SC
Jie Li, Assistant Director for Collection Management
Jie Li, Assistant Director for Collection Management, and Robert Britton Electronic Resources/Collection Development Librarian, presented a poster:
Exploring Avenues to Help Health Science Students with Textbook Access via the Library’s Electronic Resources
at Charleston Library Conference on December 7, 2018.
The poster talks about facing the high cost of textbooks, how librarians can provide “free” textbooks to health science students:1. Identifying health science books from the existing electronic resources and listing on libguides; 2. Discussing with faculty about whether we already have the books they need; 3. Suggesting alternative books to faculty to use as textbooks; 4. Purchasing unlimited copy licenses of ebooks that are available to libraries to meet faculty demands for textbooks. The textbooks are then put on LibGuides by course or subject for students. As a result, health science students may take advantage of the library resources to reduce their expenses for textbooks. At the same time, it is a great way to promote library resources.

"Our Beloved Women: Matriarchs of the Poarch Creek"
Exhibit Grand Opening
November 14th was the Exhibit Grand Opening, "Our Beloved Women: Matriarchs of the Poarch Creek," with Stephanie A. Bryan as the keynote speaker. Designed and set up by Brittney Highland and Natalie Smith, of the USA Center for Archaeological Studies, the exhibit was based on the key women in Poarch Creek history.
These women were each heavily involved in the community life, traditions, culture, and politics that helped shaped the Poarch Band of Creek Indians into the thriving, sovereign nation that it is today. The USA Center for Archaeological Studies worked closely with the Office of Archives and Records Management of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, as well as with the Kerretv Cuko Poarch Band of Creek Indians Museum to obtain information, images, and artifacts for this exhibit, which was funded by the Alabama Bicentennial.
The Beloved Women of the Poarch Band Creek Indians number in the hundreds, and each is valued for their strength of spirit, compassion for others, and loyalty to their people.
