USA TODAY FEATURES MRFF

IN MUST-READ ARTICLE ABOUT

PETE HEGSETH’S LATEST DUTY DAY

PENTAGON CHRISTIAN WORSHIP SERVICE

“Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said servicemembers are being ‘voluntold’ to attend Hegseth’s worship sessions.

“‘When you’re told that he’s going to have a Christian praise service, and that is quote ‘optional,’ you’re being voluntold,’ Weinstein said.

Weinstein, who served for a decade as a military lawyer, said he had heard from ‘over 150’ servicemembers who reported to the foundation that names of those who attended religious services were being recorded, and that servicemembers felt pressured to attend.”

Pete Hegseth pushes his Christian faith

in Pentagon prayer services

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth introduced monthly worship services at the Pentagon. He wants to reject ‘secular humanism’ and ‘new age notions.’

This excellent article from USA Today covers Pete Hegseth’s latest duty day Pentagon Christian worship service – a Christmas service held yesterday at which the Islamophobic, fire-and-brimstone Christian supremacist pastor Franklin Graham preached to the semi-captive audience that God is a “also God of hate” and a “God of War.”

The article features MRFF’s Mikey Weinstein explaining to non-military readers what “Voluntold” means. From the article (emphasis added):

“Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said servicemembers are being ‘voluntold to attend Hegseths worship sessions.

“‘When you’re told that he’s going to have a Christian praise service, and that is quote ‘optional,’ you’re being voluntold,’ Weinstein said.

“Weinstein, who served for a decade as a military lawyer, said he had heard from ‘over 150’ servicemembers who reported to the foundation that names of those who attended religious services were being recorded, and that servicemembers felt pressured to attend.

“While ‘very hard to prove,’ Weinstein said,’we have heard about all different types of retaliation’ against servicemembers who don’t attend worship services.

‘It eviscerates good order, discipline, unit cohesion and especially, morale,’ he added.”

At Pentagon Christmas Service,

Franklin Graham Praises ‘God of War’

A Public Witness covers Hegseth’s duty day Pentagon Christian worship service with a focus on Franklin Graham’s sermon, in he proclaimed that “God also hates” and holds grudges for a really long time.

The article includes MRFF’s 2010 victory in getting the virulently Islamophobic Franklin Graham disinvited from speaking at the Pentagon’s National Day of Prayer event due to his abhorrent statements about Islam. From the article:

“In 2010, Graham was invited to speak at the Pentagon’s National Day of Prayer service in May, which again sparked complaints because of his remarks about Islam. After Muslim service members and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation objected, Graham’s invitation was rescinded. An Army spokesperson at the time said Graham’s comments on Islam were ‘not appropriate’ for ‘an all-inclusive military’ where ‘we honor all faiths.’ The spokesperson also noted Graham hadn’t been invited by the military but by the National Day of Prayer Task Force, a rightwing Christian group that was working with the Pentagon chaplain’s office for the event. Shirley Dobson, then chair of the task force, criticized the move and pulled out of holding a prayer service at the Pentagon.

“Graham complained that being dropped from the program meant his ‘religious rights are being denied here because of what I believe.’”

Dear Mikey,

Just wanted to say thank you for MRFF’s efforts on behalf of religious freedom for all servicemembers. As a proudly Jewish service academy graduate and retired general officer, I am concerned by the increasing tendency within the military to promote Christianity explicitly and, as a consequence, relegate those of us who are not Christian to a merely tolerated, second-tier status. This, not some perceived slights to Christians, is the true religious discrimination in the military, regardless of whether some leaders choose to recognize it as such. The exclusion of non-Christians, whether overt or subtle and whether intentional or not, is the antithesis of the right to the free exercise of religion guaranteed by the very Constitution we swore to support and defend. It’s really tough to build a team, as every one of the military services says it strives to do, when the message to some members of that team is that they don’t fit in because they are not Christians.

MRFF is doing important work in raising awareness of these issues and taking concrete actions to fix them. Swimming upstream is not easy, and I know that it entails very real personal risk to you and your staff. Thank you for your efforts and your personal sacrifices. Keep up the fight.
