Two USATF Oregon Members Honored
at the National Annual Meeting
Two members of USATF Oregon received special recognition at the recent USATF National Annual Meeting held in Orlando, Florida.
Scott Phoenix, USATF Oregon Certification Chair, was elected to serve as Chair of the National Officials Committee's Training Committee. In his new role, Scott will oversee the training and mentoring of all USATF Certified Officials throughout the United States. He was elected to a four-year term in office.
Phoenix, a Newberg Oregon resident, said he will continue as the Certification Chair for the Oregon Association in addition to his new national position.
Bill Kelly received the National Officials Committee Horace Crow Award as the nation’s outstanding field official. Kelly, a Eugene resident, has been officiating track and field meets for over 30 years. For many years, he served as the head official for the high jump at Hayward Field.
Several 2025 youth meets were announced at the meeting. The USATF Youth Indoor Championship will be held in March at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York. The USATF Youth Outdoor Championship will be held in June at Icahn Stadium in Manhattan, New York City. The USATF National Junior Olympic Championship is set for July 21-27 at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina.
There will also be a Youth 5k race in connection with the New York City Marathon in November. Athletes must apply and qualify to be eligible to participate. Qualifying standards will be available on the USATF website.
Several members of the USATF Oregon Executive Committee and Board of Directors, including the Association President, Lynn Brown, attended the Annual Meeting and participated in various workshops, presentations, and briefings concerning Association governance, accreditation, disciplines, and programs.
One of the highlights of the Annual Meeting was the election of Curt Clausen as the president of the entire USATF organization. Clausen is a lawyer and three-time Olympian.
