Dean of Sciences and
Engineering Announcement

The University of South Carolina Aiken announced the appointment of Dr. Chad Leverette as dean of the College of Sciences and Engineering, effective July 1.

Read more about Dr. Leverette here.
Commencement
The university is committed to recognizing the accomplishments of your amazing Pacers who are completing their four-year degree in just a few weeks. We are still making final determinations regarding commencement and the associated events, but we want to share with you what we know as of this writing.

Regardless of when we conduct an in-person commencement ceremony, qualified seniors will be considered graduates and alumni of the institution as of May 6, as planned. Degrees will be conferred from mid-May through mid-June, and this will be reflected on transcripts in Self-Service Carolina.

The timeline for mailing diplomas has not changed. In keeping with standard practices, graduates should expect to receive their diplomas in the mail by the end of August.

Encourage your graduates to monitor their USC Aiken email account for updates as they occur. Congratulations to the Class of 2020 and their families!
USC Aiken Professors Inspire
Students with Virtual Tour of Italy
Dr. Andrew Geyer and Dr. Jeremy Culler were scheduled to teach a face-to-face course entitled Immersive Studies in Western Culture . The course was supposed to be in two parts. Originally, Part 1 was to be offered on campus, and Part 2 was to be offered as a study abroad component in Florence, Orvieto, and Rome, Italy.

In order to keep costs down, Geyer and Culler were paying their own way, and the chancellor made scholarship funds available to help defray the cost of travel and lodging for students.

Needless to say, the coronavirus interfered with their plans.

Not to be defeated, each Wednesday morning the professors have a virtual class meeting to discuss reading assignments. Instead of exploring Italy in person, the students visit the country virtually through a wealth of images Culler shares with them on Blackboard. They talk about the intersection of literature and art and culture.
These professors quickly redesigned an in-person class to a virtual class and are still prepping students to experience a future trip to Italy. They plan to offer the original course again in May 2022.

This is just one example of how USC Aiken professors have persevered to give students the best possible academic experience. Ottimo lavoro! (English translation - Good Job!)
Fall Housing Registration

If your student plans to live in USC Aiken campus housing for the 2020-2021 academic year, please note these important dates and information.

If students have questions, they can contact housingco@usca.edu.
Restock the Blessing Box
As you are able, would you consider helping us  restock non-perishable  food in our  Blessing  Box, located in the heart of campus? Students who are still in housing can walk to this location to get what they need for a meal. Donations are accepted through May 1. In addition to donated food, if you can leave a couple empty grocery bags for student use that would be helpful, too.

The  box is located on Scholar Loop, across from the softball field, and adjacent to the indoor pool. To help ensure we comply with state and federal social distancing policies, please sign up for a specific drop-off time.
Atlantic Broadband Offers Internet Discounts
To ensure that students have access to the internet right now, Atlantic Broadband, a local provider, has introduced a new service, “Atlantic Broadband Internet Assist”. The new service is available for a limited time to serviceable residents in Atlantic Broadband’s operating area who are in financial need and who do not presently have internet from Atlantic Broadband.

To qualify, residents must be eligible for any of the following public assistance programs: National School Lunch Program (NSLP), Public Housing Assistance, Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), and/or Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). Customers will be required to provide proof of eligibility subject to the review and discretion of Atlantic Broadband.

The 15/1 Mbps Internet Assist service, normally priced at $9.99 per month plus taxes and fees, will be offered free for 60 days with free installation and a free modem. Those interested in the service should contact Atlantic Broadband at (888) 536-9600.
