USD School of Education at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Conference
Karen Kindle contributed to a panel on the financial challenges of teacher preparation programs at the AACTE national conference.
Karen Kindle, Ed.D., chair of the Division of Teacher Residency and Education, represented the School of Education on a panel at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education national conference last week. Dr. Kindle did an excellent job describing our yearlong residency and our process of developing a successful system for candidate supervision.

Both Dr. Kindle and Robin Wiebers, Ed.D., assistant dean of the School of Education, have done an incredible job refining our yearlong residency, articulating the strength of this model, and sharing our knowledge with other universities. Multiple institutions have visited our campus to learn about our yearlong residency, and we are proud to have incredible faculty and leaders who can provide colleagues with guidance for their own programs. The success of the program is a tribute to the commitment and dedication of faculty and staff within the School of Education.

Dr. Teresa Boysen, assistant superintendent of the Sioux Falls School District, shared,

"The Yearlong Residency Program provides opportunities for preservice teachers to experience a full year of learning alongside a mentor teacher. The yearlong program provides time for preservice teachers to be involved in all components of teaching: setting up a classroom, developing a schedule, lesson preparation and revision, assessment, collaboration, parent communication, etc.… Everyone deserves the opportunity to learn from someone who is willing to share their expertise and the Yearlong Residency Program provides this opportunity."

February Highlights
Teacher Pathway
On February 12, 13 and 14, we welcomed 91 students from all four high schools in the Sioux Falls School District to our campus in Vermillion. These students had the opportunity to sit in on education classes, learn about campus resources pertaining to diversity, and speak with current education majors about their journeys discovering USD and the teaching profession. We always enjoy collaborating with the Sioux Falls School District to provide students with new opportunities through the Teacher Pathway Program!
School of Education students volunteered to participate on a panel to answer high school students' questions.
Jason Freeman
Jason Freeman, a professional speaker who has embraced his speech impediment and become an author and bravery coach, visited the USD campus to speak in School of Education classes this week. We appreciated the positivity, humor and guidance he provided for our education students!

Research Spotlight
Jing Williams
Jing Williams, Ph.D., wrote "HERstory: When We were at War," which emphasizes the importance of putting women's contributions to the war effort back in elementary social studies curriculum. Her article was published by Social Studies and the Young Learner.

Williams has also been invited to be the guest editor of the "Research on International Social Studies Education: PreK-16" issue of The Journal of Social Studies Research.
Greta Giese and Mejai Bola Avoseh
Congratulations to Mej ai Bola Avoseh, Ph.D., and Greta Marie Giese, Ed.D., on their recent publication! Excerpts from Giese's dissertation were published in the Journal of Excellence and Innovation in Teaching and Learning.

Daniel Hajovsky
Daniel Hajovsky, Ph.D., received the Reviewer of the Year Award 2018 for the Journal of School Psychology, which is the flagfish journal for the Society for the Study of School Psychology. Please join us in celebrating this accomplishment!
Alumni Spotlight
This month we are including all of our alumni in the spotlight! During February we celebrated Unite for USD, the university's first giving day, and we are so grateful for the outpouring of support we received from our community and alumni. Thank you for every gift and testimonial that you shared to help us achieve our goals and provide students with outstanding opportunities!
Tonya Merrigan
Congratulations to Tonya Merrigan, Ed.D., for being named the next superintendent of Blue Valley Schools. In addition to receiving a bachelor's degree from USD, Merrigan received a master's degree in school counseling from the School of Education. We are confident that she will be an excellent leader for the school district!
Dawn Mueller
Dawn Mueller, who received bachelor's and master's degrees from the USD School of Education, will soon be retiring. We loved reading this interview in which she reflects on what she learned in her first grade classrooms:

"One of the most important lessons that I have learned as a teacher is to be patient and to appreciate each child’s way of learning. Each child is unique, and so learning occurs in many different ways. How one child learns may be totally different than how others learn in the classroom. Being patient and teaching to how each child learns best is challenging, but also rewarding."
Student Spotlight
YPES at the Vucurevich Children's Center
The Young Professionals of Exercise and Sport Leadership Team led a volunteer event at the Vucurevich Children’s Center for their Heart Healthy month of February. The children enjoyed learning, moving and dancing with the student organization leaders. We are proud of the YPES team for engaging with the community and helping others learn about their health!
"In Flanders Fields" Art Exhibit and Silent Auction
Elementary education majors in the K-8 Social Science Methods course created art inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae. They then hosted an art exhibition and silent auction at the Vermillion Public Library, and all proceeds and donations were given to Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3061.

This is the fourth time that Jing Williams, Ph.D., has organized this event:

"I love this art project in my social studies classroom not only because it teaches my future teachers how to be creative in teaching, but also because it engages them in learning at a deeper level and it brings the best out of each student. My students do not treat this project as another assignment that they have to complete. Instead, they try to personalize their own artwork."
